Can someone explain Elf on the Shelf to me please?

I keep seeing posts about Elf on the Shelf and lots of things on Pinterest.

It's a creepy thing that "keeps an eye on" your children and report back to Father Christmas

That does sound a bit creepy.

Could be seen as a rather sweet little magical thing to do during the run up to Christmas. Alternatively, a malevolent goblin sitting on the mantelpiece making the children quake with fear. Hmmm.

Haven't times changed. Whatever happened to calling father christmas on the phone to tell him that your little darlings were risking their booty?

I threaten to text Father Christmas.

I always spotted " Father Christmas's little robin" through the window flying past. He took messages to FC,but also reported good behaviour...I really missed him when Christmas was over.
