Basically cook your gammon in fat coke. Then put it in the oven with cloves, treacle and mustard. It is lovely.

mummy1986 · 08/11/2012 19:14

Do you slow cook it? The thread saud 5 hours but that seems ages!

No, I do about 2.5 hrs. Simmer lightly.

gregssausageroll · 08/11/2012 19:41

Only 15 mins in oven st end.

mummy1986 · 09/11/2012 09:04

In the slow cooker for 2.5hrs and 15 mins in the oven at the end? Have i got that right?
And do you need to cover the joint in the coke so its totally covered, or just 2l bottle?
Sorry for being a pain, im not a very good cook and want to get it right!

the recipe says 2l but i always cover it with coke, depends on how big your joint is really. boil in the coke for the cooking time, then coat with black treacle, mustard powder and then stick cloves in it. Cook in oven for 15 mins or so. If you have the nigella recipe book it is amazing with the sweetcorn pudding and you can make a gorgeous black bean soup with the coke :)

mummy1986 · 09/11/2012 09:10

it sounds very strange but lots of people are saying its lush, so am going to give it a go!
Cant really go wrong.....!
Thank you Thanks

It's lovely,I cook it most weekends,I don't but proper coke though, just asda/sainsburys own brand

paulapantsdown · 09/11/2012 09:16

I am too lazy to do the oven bit, so not doing it properly at all I s'pose.

I just boil gammon in fat coke instead of water now, with an onion in it too.
It makes the ham very sweet and tender.
I chuck the coke away afterwards.

mummy1986 · 09/11/2012 09:17

Would it go with hot baguettes?
Was thinking instead of doing buffet things for xmas eve, do the ham with hot baguettes

Did this yesterday in the slow cooker. No faff with glaze though.

Falling apart tender tasty ham- yum

(aldi large (ish) ham on offer £5.99 and 39p/2L aldi own brand coke)

dinkystinky · 09/11/2012 09:19

We did it at xmas last year - make sure you get the salt out of the ham first by boiling cold water with it. Use full fat coke. The Nigella recipe worked really well. Hot baguettes and a salad would be perfect.

MissChristmastRee · 09/11/2012 09:29

Also try Pork Coke! Tis amazing - 1 regular size pork shoulder joint (I buy the Sainsburys value joint) 1 can of coke and 1 bottle of Paul Neumans BBQ sauce.

Bung it all in a slow cooker for 8-9 hours maybe turn after 4 hours but not essential.

Its amazing! The pork just falls apart.

Thay sounds even better!

How long would the hame take in a slow cooker? I could put this on overnight on Christmas eve, and would be ready for the morning, save some time on Christmas day.

nkf · 09/11/2012 12:22

It couldn't be easier. Put in water, bring to the boil, throw water away. Cover ham with cherry coke and cook. I do it in the slow cooker. Other people rave about cooking it in cider.

nkf · 09/11/2012 12:24

I'm glad to you can use own brand. I've used the real thing up to now.
