Christmas party at home

Hi, I'm having a Christmas party at home this year but thus far have no idea what to do. I want to make lots of lovely food. What would you like to see at a party? Both sweet and savoury? Also, what about entertainment? Games? We have a wii with some games on too. It'll mainly be a few adults and older children about 7-17.

Oh and I will have a big vat of mulled wine on the go to keep me sane

What time will the party be & will people expect to be fed a meal or just a few nibbles? Either way, I'd go for stuff you can pre prepare as much as poss & freeze if not eaten.

If you're feeding them a meal, go for curry, chilli, lasagne type dishes. If you make them the day before, any that's not eaten can be frozen. Serve with salads, garlic bread, jackets etc. Maybe a few mince pies, cheesecake, cheeseboards type desserts.

For a buffet/nibbles party, sausage rolls, cheese rolls,cheese straws, cooked ham, jackets/potato skins or wedges, M&S 3 for 2 party food, nuts, crisps. Same desserts or some of the mini dessert type things from M&S, sainsburys, tesco etc. Again, means you can keep taking stuff out of freezer if you need more & bonus if you don't eat it all

At every family party DM always does Nigella's maple chicken and ribs and they are always the first to go!

Also, another great idea of DM's was to save potato peelings and drop them into the fryer, then cool and freeze... Perfect potato skins just need to be popped back in the fryer for a few mins (She doesn't throw anything away!)

Games, for all ages.
Animal Sound Game
Sit everyone down, and ask them to choose an animal. They are to do the sound and the action of the animal. Go all around the room, so everyone does their sound/action.... Then, you start... Do your sound/action, then remember someone else's sound/action, then, they do their sound/action and then remember someone else's sound/action... Etc..... It's hilarious. I have wonderful memories of my Grampy (sadly no longer with us) being an ostrich! Bloody priceless!

Create a story

Again, everyone sitting down. You start, and say the first sentence of a story. You make it up... How about a christmas one.... 'It was Christmas Eve and Santa and his helpers were busying around getting ready for the big night ahead.' Then, the person next to you carries it on... And one by one you all add your own sentence, making sure the story progresses well. Really good fun. We did it at our Halloween party, and passes a torch to shine onto out faces!
