I'd love to hear your suggestions. My ds is not the asking type and I never know what the other kids are asking for. DS is not sporty. He's very academic, loves maths, science, music, secret codes and cycling.

I'm going to watch this thread as I'm not sure what to get DS either.

The only idea I've had so far is the Guiness Book of Records as he's been quite fascinated by the idea of some of the records he's heard about.

Oh, and Lego (but that goes without saying with 8yo boys IME!)

moogalicious · 24/10/2012 17:28

character building sports football pitch thingy
football kit
football annual

He likes football Grin

Guinness Book of Records is a good idea, my dd is quite academic and loves these.

Yes, the Guinness Book of Records is always a staple in this house. Also, books about fascinating facts, disgusting facts and the like. Lego is another staple, and I know you can never have too much lego... but honestly, we do!

yes to the brainbox games.

Parisbanana · 24/10/2012 17:41

What are brainbox games?

lljkk · 24/10/2012 17:45

Quality scooter.

moogalicious · 24/10/2012 17:45

here

On the world one you look at the card and try to remember as much as you can then get tested on it.

sadmum1000 · 24/10/2012 17:50

Ditto to brainbox games. I bought the maths one for DS 8th birthday was a hit.
If he likes codes, what about mastermind? I loved it as a kid and going to buy for xmas. Cluedo is allso a big hit.
Hot wires electronic set is good - can make radio (really worked well for us), burglar alarm etc.
DS wants the puzzleball model of Big Ben.
All the paper jamz stuff has gone down well with us and is v cheap at the Entertainer at the mo.
What are the tech decks like smalltown? I've been pondering about them?

Oh and I've already bought the Guinness Book of World Records:-)

Looks very much like my list - ds is 8 two days before Xmas so I've got double the ideas to think of. So far my list includes...

Lego creator - 3 in 1 beach hut
Stunt scooter
Yahtzee
Cluedo
Set of sketching pencils and sketch book
Subuteo
Something football or rugby related!
A desk for his room - his request!
Books - fact and fiction

For the last 5 years he's had masses of playmobil - this year I've stopped it! Although now starting on the girly ranges for 5 year old dd Grin

Mayron · 24/10/2012 22:13

Oh, already got the tech decks stashed away too! And been pondering over brain boxes. Now added to my list!

ninjanurse · 24/10/2012 22:17

My DS is 7 he will be getting from us and friends and family - football kit, skylanders giants, board games, lego, sticker books, avengers dressing up. More practical stuff will be a new lunchbox and dressing gown.

5ThingsUnderTheBed · 24/10/2012 22:18

I have a 9 and 7 year old. Between them they've asked for:

New tv/DVD combi
Nerf guns
Skylanders giants
Transformer Weaponizers
Bop it
Lego

I've got Brainbox games lined up, they get rave reviews. I've been giving them for birthday presents too. Other than that (might not be all of these)

Stunt Scooter
Moshi Monsters game for DS
Football annual
Physics / electronics kit
Bop It
Various football and Formula 1 related bits and bobs
Monopoly

ChristmasStepThisWay · 24/10/2012 22:54

My DS already has the Hot wires electronic set - it is fantastic. He also has chemistry sets and several brainboxes - all brilliant games

Re: Hot Wires set - I love the look of that for DS but how much help/supervision does an 8yo need with that? Is it something that they can only do alongside an adult?

fedupwithdeployment · 25/10/2012 14:48

We will get 8yo DS a new bike - just hoping he grows enough to manage the next size up! He loves cycling. Will also get him some more books and maybe clothes.

happymummy2010 · 25/10/2012 17:22

Re:Hotwires set... My 8 yr old DS manages the Hotwires on his own as the instructions are very easy to follow. The parts just snap into place.

We have had to buy some replacement fuses as it only comes with a few, which blew quite easy.

The set overall is very good and is probably one of the best presents DS has received - he loves it !!

ChristmasStepThisWay · 25/10/2012 17:38

Yes to everything happymummy said

My 8 year old ds wants a metal detector and a pogo stick Hmm

MrsVincentPrice · 25/10/2012 18:08

Guiness book of records is top of the list.
Also Airfix, a Welsh rugby top and perhaps Hot Wires
