Sylvanian Families for a 2.2 year old?

my 20mo dd loves her cousins old ones we have at grandparents house..car, house and some families. Only thing is some of the very tiny tea set things do end up being fished out of her mouth so just keep an eye on (and of course have now been banished when she plays with them)

Agree about the tiny things. Have you thought about one of the junior playmobil kits?

I think so. My dd got into them when she was 8. Some of the stuff it teeny tiny and fiddly. I suppose she could play with them in a different way, like Happyland but she might find it frustrating. With Happyland, the people just slit into the cars for example, whereas with with SF you have to bend their legs and place them in.

I'd say a bit young - the ELC and Fisher Price do similar things which are better for little ones, or you could get SF and just put away all the very small things until she's older.

Some of the accessories are VERY small and some of the sets can be rather breakable. There are age appropriate playsets which I'm sure she will find just as diverting :)

I would say too young. There are so many very tiny bits, and the buildings are hugely robust either. I wouldn't want to spend that much money on them for that age group - would be better to wait until later...

I meant they AREN'T hugely robust.

And obviously it is up to you how much money you spend - but I feel their lack of age appropriateness means that they are likely to get broken before you your child get your money's worth out of them.

Are happyland and world of little people quite similar? Could you play with them together?

Happyland is amazingly durable. My (cough) substantial five year old can still sit on the pirate ship bought for him three years ago.

My nearly 4 (eek!) year old is still too young for Sylvanian families imo but plays with Playmobil 123 and Duplo people quite happily. She LOVES the Happyland stuff but DH won't have it due to its beeping/bell ringing etc (he's not one for noisy toys). I keep an eye out for SF in the sales/charity shops and have put a few things away for when she is old enough.

Depending on how fussy you are it is quite possible to blend these sets together - my DD has an assortment of Happyland/Fisher Price Little People/Duplo/random other toys that she plays with - she got the Happyland ones when much younger and still plays with them and more recently we have ventured into the horribly expensive world of SF. The F Polar Bears have their caravan and car, but 'live' in a cast off cottage from some ELC set. Although I suspect as she gets older she may discriminate more between these and the more babyish toys will fall by the wayside. She's 5 (and a half) now.

I tell you what will happen. Your DD will take all the tiny clothes off the animals. She won't be able to put them back on by herself so she'll ask you to do it. She will then take them off again. And then ask you to put them on again. Repeat x 100. Till you get bored, and then you will have lots of naked animals and the clothes will get lost.

Don't even bother with the sets with tiny little pieces everywhere.

She is too young, at risk of choking on the little bits or (more likely) will lose everything. Plus it is REALLY expensive. Get some Happyland and be happy

sorry but that is way too young. i bought some when my girls were 4 and 3, and had to put them away. they are now 7 and 6 and i still havent gotten all of them back out, just the bigger more robust bits.

I would say that most of it would be too tiny and fiddly for a 2 year old. DD has loads of SF but she didn't start collecting them until she was 5y iirr. She's 10y now and still likes it.

Before SF DD loves Happyland - lots of pieces available and much more suited to little hands and will last til 5 or 6 years.

Happyland is much chunkier than SF. IME as a child grows out of Happyland they are then about the right age for SF. You can't really interplay with the two types though as the HL people would be far too large.

What is more, small children in my house have been known to suck all the fur off.

Find one on special offer, buy it on the pretext that it was a bargain and you're saving it up till she's older, and play with it yourself. Then when you get bored in a year or two she can have it.

They are great when the kids are old enough. Very sexist but my dd has just put all her boy ones into dresses and decided they're all girls.

I'd agree , too young for the fiddly little bits.
My DD is 10 yo and has been collecting SF for 2ish years.
She's got the school (the Regency Hotel half price for Christmas last year)
They are eyewateringly expensive (£15-18 for a 'family')

Maybe look for some on Ebay to put away for her?

I bought some dolls house furniture from Hobbycraft (very nice detail, size perfect) They are not toys, but DD is very sensible.
