Homemade Christmas - planning early for hyacinths

I normally come up with the idea of planting hyacinth bulbs to give as Christmas gifts when it's too late - I am not a gardener, but I understand they must be planted way in advance! So this year I'm going to get organised and do it in plenty of time.

Get the DCs to paint the pots with christmassy motifs or, if they're not old enough, with christmassy colours?
