That's it really. Have never done it myself and wondered if it might be fun.

We have done it for every year for the past 5 years for a proper sit down meal but youngest was 14 when we started. It has been fun and a lot less stressful. We went once years ago to an Arabian buffet place but they served British food as well. DDs were 10. 12 and 14. They enjoyed that ad they could get up and get their own food as and when as and when they wanted it.

We have done it a couple of times. I think it can be good if you find a good place as some can be a bit grim/prepared the day before and reheated and I can't help but feel for the staff having to work on what is their Christmas day too!

I think if you have somewhere good that you can walk to rather than expecting someone to drive is good. Not that I am saying everyone should be tanking into the wine at the meal but everyone should be relaxed. Having done both we prefer being at home.

Just to add. Now our children are grown up. We prefer going out. No stressing in the kitchen and no arguments about whose turn it is to do the washing up.
