Turkey not been in fridge, anyone else worried about food poisoning?

I picked up the turkey at 6.30 am yesterday and it has been in an unheated utility room. It is now stuffed, foil wrapped and ready but still not in a fridge. So it will have been 48hrs at a cool room temp. Should I be worried about food poisoning?

Last year it was snowing so outside was colder than our fridge! Anyone else concerned or should I not be worrying?

should be ok as long as it doesn't smell and is cooked thoroughly

Tiggles · 24/12/2011 19:54

If it was me I would be slightly concerned and give it a very good sniff before cooking.

how cold is it where you are, and what is the temperature in this unheated utility room?

my turkey is in a box in the car tonight. Outdoor temp is 9C here.

betterwhenthesunshines · 24/12/2011 20:16

It was about 13 degrees in the room yesterday. It's now sitting on some ice pack blocks, but the car is a good idea. It's 8 degrees outside now. It seemed OK when I was stuffing it. Well, about as delightful as a large lump of dead carcass ever smells... Xmas Grin my parents said it would be fine but then they leave stuff sitting around their kitchen for weeks Xmas Hmm

Where has your turkey been?

bought mine at Tesco in their half-price clearance about 6pm today

Trills · 24/12/2011 20:25

I'm not worried about food poisoning, but I'm not eating your turkey Wink

No, not worried at all.

wonkylegs · 24/12/2011 20:41

Ours is in an insulated box in the shed... No room anywhere else

Mines on the side in the kitchen. It's been defrosting in the fridge for days but stilll seems compley solid so I've taken it out over night.

Personally I wouldn't be happy to eat meat that had been sat on the side for 2 days.

Hmm. I suggested today that mil might put tne turkey in the fridge rather than leave it in a warm kitchen for another 24 hrs - wd be a total of 48 hours. I am a slattern by nature but the thought of it is a bit bleurgh

betterwhenthesunshines · 24/12/2011 22:21

OK, well at 8 degrees outside, that's only 2 degrees warmer than our fridge.

MILs fridge is always warmer than ours, so I'm reckoning our car is the equivalent of her fridge. Also would have to be out of the fridge tonight anyway as shouldn't be cooked from fridge temp according to St Delia. That's what I'm telling myself anyway. Will do first blast of oven really really hot...

Blimey are you all still alive?

betterwhenthesunshines · 26/12/2011 14:34

Actually I went and found space in neighbours fridge, which then meant I had to go round at 4.45am to get it OUT of the fridge so it was back to room temp before putting it in blasting hot oven at 7am. Blimey, the things we do!

Turned down to 170, then last blast off heat to crisp off and it was delicious! 12 people all still standing. Aunt said they used to have their turkey hanging for a week at room temp so I think I was worrying unnecessarily...
