Best ipad apps for presents for 11 & 6 yr olds?

I have a blanket 'no' rule for any apps that actually cost money.

I went down this road because the ipad was a present to me from my DH and I didn't want it to become yet another thing I get hassled about. Because of this blanket rule my DSs (11 & 6) don't ask for apps that cost money and just play on the free to download games.

But most of them are really short lived and they get bored with them quickly.

Are there any apps you'd recommend for these ages, that I could buy them for a small Christmas present?

Plants vs Zombie and Angry Birds for the 11 year old? There's a few Spongebob games available but not sure how good they are.

Ive got DD1 an ipad for her birthday (27th) and I sat lasst night and went through several of the "best app" lists to find out what to download.

There are some great looking games - racing and shooting - but she wouldnt be keen on them, depends on your two.

Most of the onest I found were actually free - the ones on the list that have a cost are:

GarageBand - supposed to be brilliant, and a bargain at £2.99, for making music.
i Movie - £2.99 too, and lets you use the video capacity
Incerdibooth - 59p, camera settings
Star Walk - point at the night sky, it identifies the constellation, tells you all about it, £2.99
IA writer - I think this was the most recommended note/word processing type programme, £2.99, probably not every exciting.
