Please recommend a great Christmas DVD for Christmas Eve

... because then we can all just crash out and I won't have to entertain any of them for a few hours.

DVD needs to be suitable for DD1 (13 and in teenage cool phase), DD2 (9, still very pre-pubescent), grandma (my DM) who loves kitschy sentimental rubbish, DH and I want something a bit more witty and joky. Last year we had 'Miracle on 34th Street' (thanks for buying that, Mum) which very nearly made us vomit, it was so sentimentalised.

Christmas movies we haven't seen which are on the shortlist are:

Grinch
Santa Clause (which seems to have innumerable sequels)
Polar Express
Elf
Deck the Halls (not heard of that before)
Bad Santa/National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation are probably too grown up for DD2 and grandma!

Anyone seen any of these and can recommend them (or otherwise!)?

ooh, I've just found Shrek the Halls. Anyone seen that? The kids are big Shrek fans.

Elf and the polar express, those are on our list and they're really fab. Oh and probably the nightmare before christmas too. Interspersed with board games and peeling veg Xmas Grin

Ds loves Shrek the Halls but he is 6! it is typical Shrek stuff though so if they like Shrek they should enjoy it. It is fairly short though.

I just love elf.

Its easy funny iyswim, a bit daft but sweet and inoffensive.

Shrek the halls is good too but only short, not film length. Think your mum would prefer Elf tbh.

I also really like national lampoons Blush

Nativity is on tv on the 23rd and polar express on 24th...can't wait both have good reviews, going to record them for Christmas eve Xmas Grin

Loved Nativity too......took DD to cinema to see it for a mother/daughter bonding session after DS was born and we both laughed and cried, love it Grin

Would suit your age ranges I think

Love both Polar Express and Elf but our Xmas movie is by traditional Polar Express. We watch 'It's a Wonderful Life' with fizz and munchies when DS is in bed.

I can access certain programmes via iPlayer, but films like that are often not available and the technical qualiity isn't great once it's transferred to the big TV. Hence the need for DVDs.

OK, so I decided to order Elf and Polar Express. They seemed to get the most enthusiastic responses. Polar Express was easy enough, but Elf proved really difficult. Although it's available for 3 quid in the UK the cheapest version I could find here in Germany was over 20 euros (it doesn't help that Elf means 'eleven' in German, so I got some weird responses to the search). I can't order from amazon.co.uk for a delivery in Germany as far as I know, and it's probably too late now before Christmas to get it delivered reliably. Perhaps I can see it in town tomorrow for a lower price.

Thanks for all the responses. I'm glad to have ordered Polar Express at least. They'd better like it .

Prep and Landing is very good as well, but is a short film, I think it's about 30 mins.

Thanks Storm, for some reason last night when I went to Amazon.co.uk it refused to recognise my registration details, but I've just tried again and it worked this time, so I've ordered Elf for 3 quid plus postage - much better! Now I have both DVDs, kids/grandmas have to be happy with at least one of them.

Some of the prices on Amazon Germany are just crazy stupid. On the other hand I've got plenty of stuff in the past for 1 cent, so I shouldn't complain.

peanuts please don't apologise - I should have mentioned it in my OP!

prep and landing is on every other day or so on Disney Movies. There are 3 of them. 2 at about 25 minutes each and a shorter one of 5. They are good. I wish there was an hour long movie!

Elf is our ultimate favourite family christmas film. It never stops being funny no matter how many times you watch it.

I have bought the Ice age one that is excusive to Asda for our Christmas eve treat. I know it won't be long but I love the ice age films Xmas Grin
