Can anyone recommend a good brand/shop? I've googled, but can't find anything that looks right. He wants a long-sleeved, zip-up one in a bright colour. Ideally in fabric similar to the kind of nylon-mix that tracksuits used to be made out of.

TIA Smile

Most local bike shops stocK Altura stuff - also some Halfords' and Evans cycles (big chain, no pun intended)

The type of fabric you want is called softshell.

If you've got a Decathlon near you, they have loads. They maybe have a website that you can buy online, too.

Two of my children race during the summer - I say two, the youngest is only 4 but has been taking part in young childrens races since he was one and a half years old. He's been riding a bike without stabilisers since he was 2. We put him on a balance bike at one and a half and within 5 minutes of having a proper bike with no stabilisers he was off around the car park on his own.
My other son is 13 and regularly races at Mallory Park.
