number of lights to cover a 6ft tree

every other year i buy new lights in the hope of covering the tree evenly. So, a 6ft tree... 50? 100? 200? 500? on a string.

Where am I going wrong?

I feel your pain - every year I dream of a lovely twinkly tree ( as seen in various telivision homes - usually American) - every year I fail to acheive the picture that's in my head - either not enough or just too many which makes it look silly, if any one has a foolproof plan please share !

I've bought 2 sets of 160 LED warm white ones and it looks nice.

When I got our 6ft tree, I bought a box of 500 white lights for it, and I find them to be to many. I end up taking handfuls of lights and stuffing them into the middle of the tree.
The end result is good, but I do think 500 is too many! HTH

Thanks. That's really helpful. I was going to go and get 500! I think I'll get about 300 instead.

Amazing how 100 look so few and miserable.

i have a 6ft tree with 300 lights - perfect imo!

our main 8ft tree will have 250+ lights, the smaller ones (5ft mainly) about 100 each. It depends which dc gets to the decoration boxes first as they all do a tree each and raid the best lights/decs.
