I've just posted this in Chat, because its for a birthday present I didn't think to put it here, but then I thought you guys might help too.

I need to get a birthday present for my 5 year old nephew, but I have no idea what 5 year old boys like. Is Ben 10 too young?

I am getting him a bike helmet but want to get him something else too but if I knew what things are 'in' for 5 year old boys I'd have somewhere to start.

Well mine likes Ben 10, poxy bloody Power Rangers and Timmy and football.

whatstheetiquette · 04/12/2011 16:02

Depends on their friends really.

My 5yo will still play with Ben10, but he doesn't lust after any new figures. I do think it is a bit young. I would give to a 4yo, but not a 5yo.

The boys who are nearly 6 in my DS's class like Star Wars.

reckoner · 04/12/2011 16:04

Star Wars
Harry Potter
Batman
Spongebob

Ben 10 was so 2 years ago.

QueenOfTheMadhouse · 04/12/2011 16:05

My 5 year old likes Star Wars also.

BramblyHedge · 04/12/2011 16:05

My ds hates ben10. Loves lego and star wars, Batman, spiderman. He isnt really into characters though apart from star wars.

BramblyHedge · 04/12/2011 16:06

I know not everyone likes it but lego is a fairly safe bet.

Notnapping · 04/12/2011 16:07

Mine hates Ben 10with passion

Toy story, smurfs, batagons (sp?) and getting into transformers, oh and cars t

whatstheetiquette · 04/12/2011 16:29

Yes, I forgot Cars 2 - lightning mcqueen, lots of them adore that

PatriciaHolm · 04/12/2011 16:39

Star wars here, or fighter planes!

Oakmaiden · 04/12/2011 16:40

My lad is 6, and he and his friends are quite obsessed by Moshi Monsters stuff...

TheGoddessBlossom · 04/12/2011 16:45

My 5 year old loves Sccoby Doo and Batman, and anything wizardy.

HTH!

jaquelinehyde · 04/12/2011 16:49

Spiderman, Batman, Superman, Scooby doo, starwars, transformers, cars2, Toy story etc, etc. (Ben 10 and Power Rangers are banned in this house)

Or steer clear of all the crap character stuff and go for good old fashioned cars, areoplanes, fire engines etc.

leftmymistletoeatthedoor · 04/12/2011 17:07

Ds is about to turn 5 . He loves star wars, doctor who (despite never having seen it), cars 2 and playmobil and lego.

WhoIsThatMaskedWoman · 04/12/2011 17:11

Anything Lego-StarWars related would probably be good. Cars from Cars are hard to go wrong with. My DS would kill for an Angry Bird toy (Santa will oblige).

Ask the parents whether he does Brio, an extra train or clever bit of track usually goes down well if they do.

Seona1973 · 04/12/2011 17:28

mine likes pokemon, beyblades, moshi monsters, angry birds. He grew out of Ben10 a while ago.

SandyChick · 04/12/2011 17:35

My ds is 4.4 years old. He likes ben10, batman, spiderman, Cars, transformers and star wars. I'd say some star wars Lego would be good or maybe some playmobil? He likes police, fire engines, bin trucks etc

toomuchmonthatendofthemoney · 04/12/2011 17:45

Lego Star Wars is favourite here at the moment (ds is 5 and a half) also likes superhero stuff esp Spiderman and Batman, liked the recent Smurfs film and also Bakugans (overpriced tat imo tho!). Was never really into Ben10, i didn't let him watch it and its kind of passed him by.
You really can't go wrong with lego for a 5yo boy i think.

runnyhabbit · 04/12/2011 17:53

Agree with the rest of the posters. Lego, Bakugan, Star Wars are all safe bets (ds1 is 6 and ds2 is 4) Ds1 also likes techdecks (mini skateboards that you play with your fingers) Moshi monsters, Transformers and Cars2 characters.

MrsJohnDeere · 04/12/2011 18:00

You can't go wrong with Lego or Transformers.

My 5yo says Moshi Monsters is 'for girls' although he has no idea what it actually is.

bunnynose · 04/12/2011 18:09

My almost 6 year old nephew is asking for Spiderman stuff and Lego this year. He's not really into Ben 10 anymore. He likes Toy Story and Cars as well.

PeppaPigHostage · 04/12/2011 19:23

Thanks guys, I've hedged my bets and gone for a Ben10 helmet because there was surprisingly little choice in his size and some Lego Star Wars which looks seriously cool!
Thanks again!
