Gift to remind them of home...

I am hoping for some mumsnet inspiration...

My sister and her husband are moving to Hawaii early next year. We will really miss then and want them to know that. We want to buy them a present for Christmas (each or one to share) that will remind them of England.

I am happy to pay a decent amount or make it a cheap joke gift alongside something else.

Any ideas will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

what about a making a really nice scrap book full of photos (some old and some taken now of family and friends being silly etc), photos of their town, (you could even make a story to go along with the photos. You could also include other things, eg leaves, flowers, or daft things that they can't get in Hawaii like kitkat wrappers, tea bag labels etc, it can be fun and jokey as well as being serious and on the last page put a photo of everyone

A hanky knotted at each corner, some Argyll socks for him (to wear with his sandals) Grin a bucket and spade, a union jack T shirt each...

Brilliant suggestions, thank-you. Please keep them coming.

CountyDurhamLass - I really wanted to create a photo scrap book of memories but have sadly realised that we have been rubbish at taking photos of extended family over the last few years. But good idea, and I am now thinking of a scrap book ideas...

PomBear - Great idea re bucket and spade and union jack clothes. Thanks.

Is there a type of pottery/glass etc that is from the area that they live. Eg I live near sunderland and they make glass there so a vase or ornament as a housewarming gift for their new home that has a link to their 'home' home?

Not expensive but I send a friend abroad a calendar of British scenes each year.

PomBearAtTheGatesOfDoom · 04/12/2011 23:34

Do the Proms do a CD? or something along those lines, with Pomp and Circumstance and all the "proper" Last Night music on - that would be nice.

Do they celebrate Christmas? What about a CD of christmas songs - either carols or pop songs.

I agree with the calendar or maybe an artwork of a local scene? I grew up in Norfolk and now live halfway across the country. One of my neighbours has a Norfolk landscape in her house, which I love: it's captured that flat, brilliant light so well. Tbh I'd sit there and just watch it for hours if I could Grin

Maybe a stone from the local beach (if you live near one)?

If you haven't taken many photos could you make an album and label some spaces, leaving them blank, and take the pictures in the future to email? For example, 'All of us, [insert favourite place], May 2012'.

Really like the idea of a calendar... Thinking I could tie in the idea of it having British scenes plus I could see if I could personalise it with family photos and note our for future get-togethers plans on there.

Yes they do celebrate Christmas, so good idea to have some good British Christmas songs to remind them of home.

I am loving the idea of new home gift being linked to their old home... Will give that some more thought.

Thanks!
