we have friends coming on boxing day. what could I give them?

Just something little as an extra.

Books. I always say books. Novelty socks? those ones with the five separate toes seem to be popular just now.

Pencils, pens and rubbers are useful for school.

I would say something to keep them busy on the day - like Top Trumps or a puzzle book.
