Be honest - how much will your Christmas food shop cost?

When I was a kid my mum used to buy a Christmassy thing each week with the weekly shop starting about October. We had a Christmas cupboard that would gradually fill up with jars of mincemeat, tins of Quality Street, Christmassy napkins etc. My mum ordered the turkey and ham from the butcher's 8 weeks in advance and bought satsumas and nuts from the market on Christmas Eve.

How times have bloody changed. Did my Ocado shop for 23rd Dec - a week's worth of food for four plus bits and pieces for entertaining a couple of times. Cost me £180! Lucky pay day is tomorrow. Is this wildly extravagant? Do other people spend this much or am I going OTT? This is in NO WAY a stealth boast or anything, btw. I am actually horrified that I have spent that much on food (and that only includes a bottle of bubbly - no other booze bought yet!).

I have no idea tbh. We haven't decided on a meal plan.

But there is only 3 of us and we aren't hosting anything, so in theory it shouldn't cost much more than usual. The meat and cake is £24 already though so that's that theory out the window!

I think if you're buying the 'nice' versions of everything it's easy for the money to stack up very quickly.

Nothing
We go to my parents Christmas day and his parent boxing day- both load us up with leftovers that feed us till new year.

catering for 12 of us over christmas (faints) so around £350 I think - they are going to be with us for 4 days!

I don't think £180 is so bad Blush. I will probably spend around that as I will be entertaining on Christmas Eve and then there's Christmas Day and the general nice stuff I feel obliged to buy. I don't plan to go mad though. I've bought some bits already, but not much.

I may also get a very large bottle of vodka, just for me. I don't usually drink much as we spend Christmas away, but this year is my first at home and I suspect I may need a big drink... or six Grin.

I think probably £150 for me, dh and 13m old DS. But I hope to get enough food to see us almost to New Year for that. I won't quite manage it as DBIL and his wife and 2 children have invited themselves that week. We're pleased to have them, but it will put the price up.

TeWihara · 30/11/2011 17:35

I have just looked at my budget, and I'd listed an extra £50 on top of the usual shop for the christmas food. I'm not sure if we'll spend all that or not.

We have family of 4 (though with a 6 month old!). Mine has cost approx £200, I'm quite particular with meat so that constitutes about half. I'm worried about the Turkey though, its a crown and the weight is 5kg, I'm concerned it won't fit in the oven and I'll have turkey coming out of my ears. And that £200 doesn't include halcohol either! Bar one bottle of Cava.

Oh well, tis the season to be jolly and I received a £500 tax rebate today! Turkey curry til Feb, bring it on!

Last year we hosted 12 of us & spent about £300 on food & booze which I accidentally on purpose dropped into conversation then felt terrible about having done so as I am sure I am now considered tight & mean when in fact I actually meant to highlight that I had compulsively bought enough food for an army & that everyone should eat up or be throttled

I am planning to hit the supermarket about an hour before closing on Xmas eve & just buy whatever is on offer/on the shelves. Really not fussed exactly what we'll be having. Will tell you all about it later if I remember. Nobody but me likes turkey, for start. Family of 6, no other guests.

huggiemonster · 30/11/2011 18:47

quite a bit but I do splurge at christmas and go a bit bonkers in M&S. 3 of us on Christmuas Day plus 19 on boxing day so all in probably around £350-£400.
