Shaded lights or Plain Bulb multi-coloured lights

What sort of lights do you all use for Christmas? Plain multi-coloured or clear lights or ones with lantern, flower or bell shades? What ones do you regard as more 'Christmassy' and that you would just use for Christmas? I don't like the new led lights very brash and cold looking.

Plain clear/white lights look far nicer in my humble opinion!

Do you think if the shades weren't made out of plastic they would like nicer then?

I have tried different colours over the years but always come back to clear/white lights. I have some with a very slight 'twinkle' to them (not the manic migraine-inducing ones!) and they look lovely.

White/clear ones do look magical and i guess its down to how they are arranged. I have a set of clear twinklings which i shall place on some swag. I guess the shaded ones are classed as 'Kitsch'? I have seen some nice shaded ones made with brass lanterns and some glass lantern lights. There is something about plastic that gives things a 'tacky' look don't you think?

I do have some coloured lights, really old ones in the shape of victorian lanterns. I don't put them on the tree though, I have them draped over things (last year they were hanging around a doorway). I think coloured lights (and/or shaded lights) can look pretty, but IMO they don't look good on Christmas trees.

We have 3 sets of white lights and inreally want to like them but I always go back to the warm quality street coloured ones.

Not to mention very difficult to decorate with shaded lights on a tree. The shades obscure the other decorations imo. I think like you say shaded lights look better around a door way or room.

I have a set of father Christmas shaded lights (a bit like the fairies in a cone shape that I used to make in school Grin). I think there are about 15 lights on the string. I also put a long string of white lights on the tree with the FCs. Then I have a third set of multi-coloured lights that I wrap around the stairs which are in the lounge. Plenty of room for decorations aswell as lights.

I have a set of B and Q glass shaded father christmas lights. They look great when lit!
