My favourite cookbook is Jamie Oliver's Ministry of Food. I have made loads and loads of the recipes from the book and every single one has been fantastic. It is full or recipes you would actually make rather than dinner party only food. It is appropriate even for inexperienced cooks. My only criticism is that it doesn't have a lot of desserts or baking in it.

What about a magazine subscription instead? I picked up a copy of Olive last year and was so impressed I did the next five issues for a fiver offer and I have carried it on since

Loads of recipes, foodie info too in Olive, a few restaurant reviews! The occasional free gift! :D

There's loads of foodie type magazines around, and you can exchange tesco tokens too if you can bear the fuss! :D

What sort of cooks are they?

If they are v serious foodies, Heston B has one out which is on offer on The Book People.

Any of the Nigella books. I can spend hours reading through them and she has never failed me yet on any recipe.
