I have my parents coming for a meal on boxing day but they will have been stuffed with a full turkey dinner on xmas day at my brothers - so am currently thinking a beef or ham joint but what to serve with them that is not roast dinner-ish - all ideas welcome!

Are you sure they wouldn't want a roast the day after?

If not, I would probably do ham, serve it in cold slices. Serve with salads, crusty bread and butter. pickles etc.

Or even cold ham/beef, fried egg and chips?!

Cold meat and chips, posh chutney, salad, fresh bread

Jacket potatoes, crusty bread and nice salads.

Oooh, I love a good ham on boxing day Grin

Delia had a lovely Christmas Coleslaw in her book, made with celeriac I think. Plus a warm potato salad.

Try sauerkraut or red cabbage with apple raisins and pine nuts? I am eating in Bavaria a lot and the dishes are growing on me.

Fresh warm rolls yummy.

Although bubble and squeak is an old tradition isn't it?

At our house boxing day has always been cold meat and chips with plenty of pickles. However, Im not sure what I would do if I was entertaining ... But as its your parents, why not just ask them? I would if it was my parents. What did you have at home on boxing day (when you lived with your parents)? Perhaps try and recreate that?

Nigella's filled potato skins are great with a cooked ham. Then you can do salad-y sides or something simple (and not christmas dinner-ish) like corn on the cob with it? Lots of left over home made cranberry sauce too, mmmmmm!

tassisssss · 20/11/2011 22:29

(oh and you can make them in advance and freeze which is an added bonus!)

maggots has it spot on. Love coleslaw or red cabbage with ham.

On boxing day you must have bubble and squeak made with freshly cooked potato but left over vegetables (particuarly brussels sprouts) from the day before. Serve with pickles, tomato salad, beetroot and green salad.

Baby corn, mangetout, baby carrots - that kind of veg.

Potato dauphinoise, potato rosti etc.

Though I woudl prefer chips and chutneys and pickled onions and salad, I have to say.
