What to buy for almost 8 year old DS?

I have searched back a few pages but can't find anything.

I'm really stuck on what to get for DS this year. He'll be 8 in Feb but isn't in to typical toys for that age range really, he'd rather play on computer games or make random tat objects from cardboard boxes etc.

We're getting him a v basic iPod touch for his main present and I'm thinking of getting him the Cluedo board game (any good?) but apart from a few tiny things hat I've picked up, that's about all I can think of!

I'd appreciate any help, thanks loads! :)

Lego?

He sounds similar to my dd1 (who's a tom boy and spends most of her time on the pc), her face lit up when she saw a add on the tv the other night for an electronics set like this , you can make lots of different circuits to make a radio, a fan etc..

Also things like triops and volcano making kit ??

What about books (if he likes to read), dd likes 'diary of a wimpy kid' so i have got her the new book which came out this week.

MrsMeow · 18/11/2011 20:44

He LOVES diary of a wimpy kid, thank you, I didn't even think of that! I'll get him the 2nd DVD as he's only seen the first. If its any good to you, he got a diary of a wimpy kid DIY book from Asda not long ago which was like a do it yourself comic book type thing, loads of fun - it kept him quiet for ages!

We've had triops before which he lost interest in, but the volcano kit and the electronics set look fab, thanks very much :)

Thats ok, dd1 is mad on diary of a wimpy kid, we saw the 2nd film in the cinema (first time i had taken her) and even i enjoyed it, we also have the DIY book (kept her busy for weeks), the new book is hard back, i think amazon have it on offer as does WH Smiths, hope he enjoys it.

How about a scooter? Every lad aged between 7 and 13 (ish) round here seem to be permanently attached to a scooter!

Plonker · 18/11/2011 21:09

Oh, and we have the Harry Potter Cluedo - its fab!

Lindax · 18/11/2011 22:01

ds (also 8 in Feb) has asked for

  • Simpsons cludeo from Argos (its aged 8+ and can be played with 2 players - normal cludeo says 9+ and 3 players I think)
  • Uno Extreme (he loves the Uno card game so hope this is good)
  • Loads of Pokemon stuff (DSi game, figures, cards, annual etc)
  • Beast Quest books
  • Football kit

Wanted a BIG pressie so we've got him as a surprise a junior 4'6" pool table - hope he likes it!

MrsMeow · 20/11/2011 15:59

Marne, FYI the Book People website have wimpy kid books on offer at the minute :)

Thanks Plonker, my mother is buying him a scooter as his old one is battered to bits! Will look at the HP Cluedo as well as the Simpsons and drop hints as to which one he prefers!

Lindax that's really helpful, thanks. It's a bit of an awkward age isn't it? That pool table looks fab, and what a bargain!

Uno is a good idea. DS loves the card game too. I've not heard of Beast Quest but funnily enough was looking at them on the net before. I might get those and some horrible histories or similar.

Thanks everyone for your help :)

ravenousbugblatterbeast · 21/11/2011 10:06

How about makedo to help with making random tat?

MrsMeow · 21/11/2011 19:23

Wow thanks everyone, there are some fantastic ideas there! Taffeta, I've copied you and added the dawning faces book to my basket on amazon - hope you don't mind! Spy stuff is a great idea for him, he loves spying on dd and her friends (much to her disgust!)

I might get him some more Hexbugs to add to his collection, and my mum has told me today heat she's bought him some wimpy kid stuff.

ravenousbugblatterbeast those makedo are a BRILLIANT idea! I've never seen anything like that before, how cool! I'm going to order him the free play kit for one (£9.99 on amazon) and am thinking about the robot one as well. Thanks, he will love that!

Thrilled to see this thread, as I too have an almost 8 DS. And his birthday is in early Jan, so it's double whammy present time. For xmas/birthday he is getting:

  • a wii (I think - very confused about the gaming technology, and which is best)
  • a light sabre and darth vader costume
  • he's also getting 'cabin fever' by the wimpy kid author
  • other books
  • blokus board game
  • sports stuff: cycling kit, nice football, mini indoor cricket bat with weeny ball (yes I am a masochist)

What kind of scooters do your 8-ish DS's use ? Are those razor scooters ? And do any of you recommend either roller blades or heelies for a gift ?

I highly recommend Rummikub - one of his favourite games.

Taffeta · 22/11/2011 12:01

My DS got this for his birthday last year. Its fab! He uses it loads and his friends all want to borrow it.
