I've never given one or received one
I think some people ahev grown up with them and ot's they who continue the crap tradition

lostlady · 18/11/2011 15:15

Funny, I do, exactly because of tradition. But was thinking might just do separate sweets instead, my dc would probably like better.

I used to get the occasional one at Christmas as a child, but only from friends of the family. There was always one item that got left until all the Christmas sweets were eaten and there was nothing else. I think separate sweets would be nicer too, or a multi pack of a favourite.

I could just eat a curly wurly now!

PotteringAlong · 18/11/2011 15:33

My MiL. For everyone. Every year :o

The key is that she buys everyone (adults / children indiscriminately) a different selection box thus causing a mass swap of sweets and chocolate by all involved :)

MollyintheMoon · 18/11/2011 15:33

I get very upset if my DM doesn't get me one but I don't buy them for DC. It's nice to start your own traditions and selection boxes just aren't as much fun for younger children. Last year it was chocolate coins which are cheaper much more exciting.

sillymillyb · 18/11/2011 15:47

Me.... for myself.... from the moment they are available in the shops, so i can eat them in front of the tv!

I used to put them in the ex's stocking as a filler too, prefer chocolate coins now mind!

spugglers · 18/11/2011 15:52

I had them as a child. When I see them in the shops I get that excited christmassy feeling! I remember my mum always bought them for my cousins and my naughty sister would find them and we would have midnight feasts gorging ourselves on them!

I saw them in Tesco today they are very good value much cheaper than buying the items individually.

AngryFeet · 18/11/2011 15:53

I don't normally but was in Tesco yesterday and they were doing buy one get two free so I got 3 (one for each DC and one for DH).

blouseenthusiast · 18/11/2011 15:53

What do we actually mean by a selection box? thsoe big tins of Roses and Celebrations? Or any old mixed box of chocs?

AngryFeet · 18/11/2011 15:54

Here

blouseenthusiast · 18/11/2011 15:55

I feel i must have been living under a rock - never noticed those before.

ginmakesitallok · 18/11/2011 15:55

Blouse Shock You DON'T know what a selection box is???Shock

GwendolineMaryLacey · 18/11/2011 15:56

Me, tradition and I especially like them half price after Christmas :)

bagelmonkey · 18/11/2011 15:56

The problem with selection boxes is there's always something nobody likes, like revels or topic.

olibeansmummy · 18/11/2011 15:57

Ds got one last year and I ended up eating the curly wurly when desperate for chocolate in July Grin was out of date but needs must, and it tasted fine lol

I am a bit shocked about these selection boxes, gin. And wondering what other commonplace stuff has passed me by...

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 18/11/2011 16:02

My fussy DS probably wouldn't eat most of it so more for me hardly worth buying.

mnistooaddictive · 18/11/2011 16:06

When I was 18 my mum stopped buying me a selection box as she thought I was too old. I made it clear that I won never he too old so she still buys me one now. I am 37!
I buy them for my children because they are such a huge part of my own Christmas tradition. Who wouldn't want 8 different bats of chocolate and then negotiating the swaps.

When I was young I always had a selection stocking. It was cardboard in the shape of a stocking with white net over the chocolate. I loved it. But then we were only allowed chocolate once a week in our house. Sad

schroeder · 18/11/2011 18:29

Oh sparkling, does that mean you had to make it last for weeks? Shock

I've only ever bought them after Christmas in the sales myself, but I suppose they could work for cheap easy presents for children.

Poor blousenthusiast Sad

i buy each niece and nephew one every year with their present - they look better than box chocs etc for kids!
