Ooh watching with interest as so woukd DS and I haven't really seen anything.
My godmother made me one at a similar age: she used an old chocolate box that she decorated, and put in: embroidery threads, large embroidery needle, scissors, pincushion, some pieces of that material you can do cross stitch on, some felt, and a book of children's sewing stitches (cross, blanket, running etc). Half an hour in John Lewis haberdashery will set you up!

My DS was desperate for a sewing kit for his birthday - i found some on the internet and asked which he would like best. He chose the Ladybird - learning to sew kit. It comes in a retro tin and you make a teddy bear. It was easy enough for him to do as the holes are already punched in.

I made up my Ds' when he wanted one. Got hold of a boyish tin suitcase (those small ones). Then bought a load of embroidery cotton, mix pack of mini cottons, pack of needles/spare buttons from sainsburys. Then cut some bits of fabric from my own collection. Also bought cheap cross stich set from Wilkinsons.
