Am I the only one who thinks Elf on the Shelf is totally creepy!?!?

I can't think of anything worse for a child than having a sly looking elf who is sat there watching them all the time and apparently reports back to Santa as to behaviour. (this seems to be what it's about in a nutshell).

Bah humbug!!

TheElvesSawBatgirlKissingSanta · 16/11/2011 21:00

I did think this to!
But then I thought 'Stuff it, it will keep ds in line', he has recently turned into a little shit monster lately I'm willing to try anything! Grin

Anyway I'm to excited about my elf's adventures! Grin

All seems like too much work for me. ;)

Sleepyspaniel · 16/11/2011 21:02

Are you KIDDING?! Bah Humbug!? I am outraged! I am the least bah humbug person in the world! I have already got ALL FOUR sets of new pyjamas and they not just new they are all Christmas themed, AND I bought two of them back in August, AND I have done all the Christmas shopping, AND bought new fairy lights and planning on putting tree up on Saturday 3rd December AND I do reindeer food and I have ordered four new Christmas CDs and... and..

I actually think Elf on the Shelf is Bah Humbug! Its just it can't be pleasant for the children to feel they have a creepy doll watching their every move!

It doesn't have to be about the behaviour I have 24 little activities/gifts planned for my DD's elf to give her instead of using an advent calendar and I hope it will build into a tradition and provide her with nice memories when she is older.

AitchTwoOh · 16/11/2011 21:17

oh no it's adorable, i think. my two love theirs, love it when he moves, and chat to him about, ya know... girl stuff and glitter and presents and stuff. it's great fun listening to them yak on at him.

and he's not sly. he's cheeky.

LordOfTheFlies · 16/11/2011 21:23

I think the Original Elf On The Shelf is an evil looking little scroat Grin

My own, homemade EOTS this year will be a Hannibal from the 'A' Team doll -the Liam Neeson one.
He talks too.
I wonder if he'll be so chatty when he sees the lovely red and green felt Elf outfit I'm going to make.
Bet you'll love it when that plan comes together ,eh Hanny?

playdead · 16/11/2011 21:27

I totally agree. It's very creepy. I'd imagine it coming to life when no one was looking Grin

AitchTwoOh · 16/11/2011 21:28

what like in that famous horror film Toy Story? Grin

LordOfTheFlies · 16/11/2011 21:32

But they do come to life and they scuttle off on Christmas Eve to grass the children up reports back to FC who's been good or bad. Grin

AitchTwoOh · 16/11/2011 21:41

every night, according to the book. Every Single Night. Grin
honestly, it's a right old laugh, especially if you can move him while they are in the room. me and dh posl when they look up to chat to him and he's GONE.

Sleepyspaniel · 16/11/2011 21:54

AitchTwoOh, now you come to mention it there are other horror films where dolls come to life! maybe that's why I don't like it? The Elf on a Shelf that I saw is a retro 50's looking one with a really quite evil expression.

I love ALL things Christmassy and had never heard of Elf on a Shelf but when I looked on Amazon and saw it I was Shock that anyone would want that hanging around the house! especially apparently "spying" on the kids! OK I know it's just a toy but I am a wimp still leap into bed from a distance because I feel hands are going to grab my ankles from under the bed Blush and have to have lots of lights on when I'm in the house on my own! i know what you mean about the face, it is photographed INCREDIBLY badly on amazon. i just trusted in the opinion of the MN Massive (consensus being that it's much nicer IRL) and went for it. happy to report that it IS much nicer IRL. thank fuck. Grin

playdead · 16/11/2011 23:19

Exactly Aitch Grin

I had a wind up doll that used to wink and move in the middle of the night and frighten the crap out of me. Maybe I never got over it.

LAbaby · 16/11/2011 23:25

Play dead I'm horrified just thinking about your wind up toy. You've put me off eoas now!

playdead · 16/11/2011 23:38

LAbaby I hid it in the attic after a few nights of being woken up by it. It really was scary :)

UniS · 16/11/2011 23:56

not sure about "creepy" I do think its a waste of my time , so I shall not be doing it.

pissedrightoff · 16/11/2011 23:58

As much as I love the concept and tradition of the elf, I must admit that I did find him a wee bit sly and sinister looking.

So I got a cuddly gnome stuffed toy instead. :) (and he was only £2.99)
