Suitcases for Christmas?

we head to NZ for just over a year, a year from now. Given we neither want to store too much stuff or take too much with us, we thought we would look at nice children's suitcases (cabin size) for the dcs for Christmas. They're 6, 4 and nearly 4, and I realise luggage might not be the most exciting present but adding to the toy pile seems a bit pointless just now. Terrible idea, or can I build on this a bit and make it work? Think will all be too big for trunkies by then, so any suggestions on nice kids luggage would be welcome. Also staying on a travel theme, looking for suggestions for little items they could use too. Thanks x x x

I think it is workable, and adds to the excitement of the big move.

No idea about suitable luggage, DD is almost 3 and got her first Trunkie this year.

Items to go along with them though: Travel games - you can get travel versions of hungry hungry hippo's, connect four etc. Great for the long flight. A portable DVD player to share between them (again to keep them occupied on the flight).

Thanks TheRealMrsH, hadn't thought of travel games - great idea, it's going on my list!

The Trolley Cases here are gorgeous: £50.

NoHunIntended, they're the ones I had my eye on, love the penguin. Ds would really like the dragon - I'd only seen the penguin ones before - thanks.

Just reslised that I said my kids are 6, 4 and nearly 4, meant 6, 4 and nearly 3 - the other combo of ages would be packing them in close even for me!

I saw them in the flesh, they are really gorgeous! You are welcome!

I did wonder about the age gaps! Not impossible though!

Oooo, just looked on picturecases website and they do seals, monkeys and pandas too. Think I'll almost def go for this make, they really are cute. Reckon my eldest dd would like the seal, ds the dino and little dd the penguin (big Pingu fan)!

Just need more accessories ideas now...

Cool, happy to have helped.

Is your oldest DC too young for a travel diary? Else, comics, colouring books, puzzle books, sticker magazines - all disposable, so don't add to the toy pile. Or a camera?

Or how about a new little wallet, with some NZ cash.

I am rubbish at presents (I once bought DH a bathmat for Xmas, he wasn't impressed)

I do like a practical present. But I'm not sure about luggage and travel games thing .... Especially when the trip is an year away - an age for small kids. I would just get them 'normal' presents that you'd be happy to get a years play out of and then pass on to others.

agree with himalaya, it's a year away, just buy normal stuff.
