but, please could you tell me what you put in them (DS1 is 3 and DS2 is 1) and where do you leave them?

Ours hang on the fireplace from when the decs go up on one of those cast iron stocking holder things. Santa fills them and leaves them at the foot of dc's bed....

My children have Christmas sacks which they hang off the ends of their beds and then Santa fills and puts at the bottom of their beds.

DS will get his in his room. He can open them in bed with us. I just want him to appreciate the 'little' presents before we go downstairs and he sees the bigger / more valuable things.

Inside goes:
chocolate coins
chocolate Santa
crayons
snap game
domino game
jigsaw
book
socks
toothbrush
toothpaste

We are going to leave Santa's mince pie, milk and the reindeers' carrot in his room too, so he will hopefully believe that Santa actually goes to his room. I will also have some reindeer dust around the stocking in the morning. So, basically the stocking is from Santa and the presents around the tree are from us and family / friends.

Can you guess that I am beyond excited and have planned it all already? Grin

Ds has a personalised one from his first Christmas, from Mothercare, it's got Santa head ontop and ared velvet sack with elasticated top.

He hangs it on the outside of his door and when he wakes up it's at the foot of the bed.

His smaller toys go in, normally choc santa, tube of buttons or Swiss equivalent, some wash things - bubblebath set, some books, dvd he has enjoyed, a sciency kit - this year it's a solar power train.

We bought a few of the smaller toys on our trip to the states so this year it will have two mini magic kits, a Lego star wars watch, a Harry Potter chocolate frog, a Harry Potter wand, a pair of wind up chattering false teeth and a few Dr. seuss books.

DS has a lovely stocking that my sister's MIL made especially. We hang it on a door handle as no fireplace.
He's 2.5 so in between your 2 and will be getting:

A small toy story football
Cars socks
Cars boxer shorts
Chocolate coins
A tube of fruit pastels
Cars foam soap
3 small playmobil sets
Cars stamper pens
A mickey mouse soft toy that will be poking out the top.
