Christmas book recommendations for ds age 6/7?

Up until this year we have had plenty of picture style Christmas books. Ds has moved on from them and I can't think of any Christmas stories other than A Christmas Carol. Can anyone recommend anything for me to read to him or for him to read to himself .. he is a free reader so most things would be ok.

Mine still love The Grinch, at 6 and 10.

The Polar Express have a special Edition with CD and Cassette included read by Liam Neilson?

Or an abridged Version of A Christmas Carol, DS likes his quite a lot.

Carrotsandcelery · 29/10/2011 22:03

Would he see that as too young?

Binfullofmaggotsonthe45 · 29/10/2011 22:05

See which one Carrots?

I was definitely thinking of an abridged version of A Christmas Carol but hadn't considered The Grinch .. have never read that one. There seem to be so many options for toddlers etc but not much beyond that!

www.amazon.co.uk/Polar-Express-Chris-Van-Allsburg/dp/1842709496/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1319922348&sr=1-1#reader_1842709496

Have a peak, my son is 6 and enjoys reading The Polar Express book to me, it's a very different book to the film, each page has quite a chunky paragraph or two.

bodiddly · 29/10/2011 22:16

that looks great actually .. I think I will order it!

Thank you all!

I've just nipped to the bookshelf in DS room, we have:

Night before Christmas
Grinch
The little christmas tree
Nativty
Hurry Santa Hurry (may be too young now but we love it)
Stickman
The Polar Express
A Christmas Carol

I think this year I'll have to have a good scour of Amazon (live overseas and have to order Christmas books by post), which is a shame, as i love scouring the christmas books and it's part of the tradition, bath, new christmas pj's , hot chocolate and new book, carrot on the lawn, mince pie and milk on the plate, teeth cleaned and up to bed.

Cue frantic wrapping....pop of wine bottle cork...

God I love Christmas....

thank you Binfull, we have Night before Christmas which I have kept but all the others are too young now. I will look for a good version of A Christmas Carol and get that Polar Express. We read Christmas books in the week or two before Christmas to help get us in the mood!

Funnily enough I saw the Tolkein book when i was posting my link, and added it to my favourites!

You are correct about boys book choices though - shockingly bad!

Binfullofmaggotsonthe45 · 29/10/2011 22:34

Oh gosh yes we have the two week run up too lol! I think this is more for me!!! However the treat on Christmas Eve is always a new book from me to DS and dad, which they are allowed to unwrap the night before. This was a tradition from when DH was in the army, and would treasure the Christmas eve storywhen he came home.

Heck, gotten a bit misty eyed now!

Carrotsandcelery · 29/10/2011 22:34

Sorry binfull I meant my suggestion of The Grinch.

You are never too old for the Grinch carrots....my son had so much fun in Universal Studios park last week in the Dr. Seuss part of the park, he didn't want to leave and the Grinch character was brilliant with him, and naughty with me!

The book is a classic.

Carrotsandcelery · 30/10/2011 10:08

Grin that is how I feel too Binfull but didn't know if it was just me Blush

bodiddly · 30/10/2011 16:21

I've never read the Grinch so will have to give that a go!
