Are you sure it isn't Spekulatius rather than Lebkuchen? They are completely different. You can get them at Lidl and Aldi, have already seen them.

Have a look at this LIDL range. You need to scroll down a little.

Spekulatius are the ginger type biscuits that I think you were talking about.

The gingerbread is Lebkuchen which is softer from the outside.

You should also try a Stollen, very yummy.

oooh, Lebkuchen, so very very wonderful! Really the taste of Christmas now, most other 'Christmas treats' are now available all year round, but there's something so very festive about Lebkuchen. (Even if I do ever see it for sale outside of the Christmas period I refuse to buy it on the grounds that I have to save something that will only be in the house at that time of year, hopefully I'll pass 'taste associated with Christmas' on to DS....)

LydiaWickam - I totally agree. You can get hot cross buns all the time now and it really takes the specialness out of things. What's the point if you can have it at any time? It's the longing and drooling in anticipation that makes it worthwhile.

Why bake? Just go to Lidl and enjoy :o

ooh but i've always dreamt of actually making them and giving them as presents! our next door neighbour did this when i was a child, but her recipe was a closely guarded secret.

I like the Nuernberger Oblatten Lebkuchen from Lidl that come with chocolate and sugar topping, but the recipe from SilentSinger looks interesting too. I will try those this Xmas, together with the 10 or so varieties of biscuits I usually bake. That's traditional too. My aunt in Germany usually bakes about 35 varieties and all her children come and get them from her.

Bettys do them all year round - yum!

MamaPizza - my granny used to have something like this and made really yummy Xmas biscuits with it. I don't have the recipes though, I am sure my aunt would have them though?
