What ipod are you buying your dc and why?

Trying to decide between a nano or touch for DD who'll be 8. She has never broken anything and doesn't play with toys anymore (except dolls and she has enough of those), loves music and storybooks and plays her cheapo static CD player every day. Thought we'd get her a nano and dock but now I'm thinking a touch might have more value on the move with apps etc. Any thoughts? What have you/ your dc liked best?

Touch.

Touch

olibeansmummy · 02/10/2011 19:37

Touch without a shadow of a doubt.

bunnyspoiler · 02/10/2011 19:39

Thanks all, touch it is. How much memory, will the basic version be enough for an eight year old who doesn't have a back-catalogue of music to download?

Definitely touch! Especially if you have wifi. So many more features/uses

Thefoxsbrush · 02/10/2011 19:40

Yeah I'd it the basic for an 8 yr old

bigTillyMint · 02/10/2011 19:41

Not buying ipods as they both have ipod nanos.

chopchopbusybusy · 02/10/2011 19:46

As everyone else has said a touch does so much more. Basic memory will be fine. I'd be keeping a close eye on what, if anything, she's looking at on the internet.
Obviously you can load it with apps for her. You can also create an icon on her home pages for websites you're happy for her to look at.

my ds has an 8gb and it is not enough for his music, apps and films [he can not fit everything on it], dd1 has a 32gb and it is brillant, if you think she is never going to ask for films to go on to it or videos then 16gb would be fine, i would never get an 8gb again. and i would always recommend a 32gb.

pramsgalore · 02/10/2011 20:03

sorry all the above for an ipod touch

MowlemB · 02/10/2011 20:40

My 7 year old DD had a second hand ipod touch last year. Its only a first generation one but we paid £50 for it. I got it because I was fed up with spending £15 - £20 on DS games that turned out to be crap. She loves it, uses it a lot. Never plays with the DS anymore (unless friends bring theirs round) and of course, there is an endless supply of free games :)

MowlemB · 02/10/2011 20:40

So yes, get the touch. You won't regret it!

Ilikepinkwine · 02/10/2011 21:12

Where do you get second hand ipod touches from? DD wants one but I am wary of getting one from ebay in case it is faulty/broken.

mumeeee · 02/10/2011 21:31

I wouldn't by an IPod touch for an 8 year old. My DD's didn't have IPods until
they were teenagers. But it is of course up to you so if you are going to get a touch I would get the 8 GB one.

MowlemB · 02/10/2011 21:38

We got ours from ebay. If they're a trader you are entitled to all legal protection from the 1979 sale of goods act.

bunnyspoiler · 02/10/2011 21:39

To be honest I would trust her with an Ipod more than her teenage brother as she's so much more responsible! She's never destroyed anything, all her toys look new and she's used to navigating and taking care of my MacBook. It's either this or a DS and I just can't stand the DS. I think the Ipod will have longevity as it's more versatile. Anyone know how many films 8gb will hold?

OP posts:
mumeeee · 02/10/2011 21:49

If she downloads a lit of films a 16gb would be better an 8gb doesn't hold that much.

pramsgalore · 02/10/2011 21:57

2 at most, but he can not have all his music and apps as well though and he does not have that much music really, films take up loads of memory, seems like alot to pay out but by the time you have bought a ds and then games, a 16gb or 32gb ipod touch is better value and in the long term cheaper

bunnyspoiler · 03/10/2011 20:29

Thanks everyone, I'll get a 32gb touch
