If I order stuff from Amazon today will it get here by Christmas or will snow screw up delivery?

Snow forecast for later in the week (am in London). Should I risk Amazon shop or cancel visit to my dad and go Xmas shopping in real proper shops on Saturday? I have bought nothing so far so really need close family presents at very least. Don't fancy explaining no gifts to my children! However, wanted to get various stuff such as kindle for sister which is Amazon specific... What to do?

I'm waiting for three Amazon parcels that should have been here several days ago, (allegedly dispatched early this week) and I'm in London. I declared a halt to online orders on Tuesday when I read OYBBKs snow thread.
Your sister will understand if you give her some bubble bath and an IOU for the Kindle, but actual shops are the answer for children. (that said, I'm giving DD an IOU, but that's because she's set her heart on a Build a Bear and it would defeat the object if I bought it for her).

I wouldn't risk it now, either, to be honest.

Any shoppign you need to do should be done on your high street (don't forget that helps the shopkeeps too)

Thanks for wise advice all! Have decided to abandon amazon and try west end on sat!

I'm not in the snowy wastes of The North, but all my recent Amazon deliveries have come really fast, even the free delivery ones. I am chancing it a bit by sending what arrives at my house in a big parcel to SIL in Scotland though. Confused

QuoththeRaven · 17/12/2010 09:43

a cd that i ordered november (dispatched 2nd of december) still hasn't arrived, but then im in scotland. I would brave the shops if i were you

gregssausageroll · 17/12/2010 09:53

I wouldn't order anything online now. I am waiting for stuff ordered on 25 November and in particular an Amazon order from 2nd December.

PestoEatsSnowWarnings · 17/12/2010 09:57

I wouldn't either, still waiting for Amazon stuff ordered on the 8th December, and we're on the South Coast.

We have no sodding snow and yet my game has so far taken two weeks to get here - from Oxford which is 33 miles away and also had no snow. Presumably it's coming by husky sled or possibly train Hmm

Last year I had an Apple order which was held up in Hong Kong. I wouldn't mind but it started out in Norway Hmm - my iPod clearly is better travelled than me.

MiasMARY · 17/12/2010 10:03

I'm still waiting for christmas cds i ordered on the 2nd and DH is still waiting for some books he ordered for me for my christmas present on about the 8th. We're near birmingham.

I wouldn't use amazon this close to christmas again.

nickeldonkeycarrymary · 17/12/2010 11:39

I'm now still waiting for a parcel coming by citilink from A##### that was "supposed" to be delivered yesterday. it's still showing as "out for delivery today" dated yesterday at 2:30pm.... Hmm

it's a laminator - i got the pouches through Royal Mail yesterday, but i can't use them yet! Xmas Shock

NorthernLurker · 17/12/2010 17:57

My books still haven't moved - ordered on 03/12 and have been in transit since 4th! V cross.

Northite · 17/12/2010 18:40

I was told by them on the phone today they couldn't deliver to me, even when it was items that had gone missing in the post that I'd ordered at the start of the month.

Its disgusting they're still advertising that they can still deliver.

Northite · 17/12/2010 18:43

NorthernLurker - call them on 0800 496 1081 as that's exactly the situation I was in. The items had gone missing, but they didn't tell me. They'll probably offer to deliver them by the 31st :(

littleredsquirrel · 17/12/2010 18:52

If its a big order you'll probably get it sooner. I've had a large parcel delivered that i only ordered a couple of days ago but the three small orders that i placed weeks ago that have been sent by royal mail are still nowehere to be seen.

I wouldn't risk it now.

mogs0 · 17/12/2010 19:45

nickeldonkey - you can iron the laminator pockets instead of using the machine. I haven't done it personally so you might want to do some research to find out the best way of doing it but I guess if you just cover it with a tea-towel and iron it would work ok?

Niecie · 17/12/2010 20:55

Got my order today, that I posted about yesterday. So ordered on 8th, delivery email received on 16th and the order arrived on 17th.

We have no snow now though.

On the other hand, ordered something small on 14th, despatch on 16th received on 17th. I don't think that came from Amazon themselves but I was very pleased that was so fast.

Nosnowplease · 17/12/2010 21:10

Ooops. I ordered today....

maggiethecat · 17/12/2010 23:55

Last year I ordered major dd gift and got it in time but would not risk it this year. I have stuff despatched more than a week ago and they still have not arrived.

jellycat · 18/12/2010 00:05

I ordered a kindle on 6th Dec, not received yet (no snow here). e-mails say it hasn't been despatched yet.

BibiBelle · 18/12/2010 00:05

I'm still waiting on stuff I ordered on the 2nd Dec and it doesn't look like we're getting it

NorthernLurker · 18/12/2010 14:41

ConstantlyCooking · 23/12/2010 10:06

Still waiting for books ordered for niece. I Ordered on 3 Dec, but they seemed to sit in a depot in Scotland until 19th. FIngers crossed. The first week in dec seemed to be an especially difficult week for orders!

ConstantlyCooking · 23/12/2010 18:24

Thanks to the magic of Mumsnet - the parcel arrived this afternoon.Xmas Smile
