Small gift for 8 year old boy?

I've just realized we'll be seeing my cousin's family over Christmas and they have an eight year old boy. Any ideas for a present for him? I have no idea what he's into toy-wise, but I do know he is very sporty. Don't want to spend much as am on stat mat pay about to go on no pay, so just a token - any suggestions would be very welcome.
