can I trim the branches on the tree as it's a tad too wide?

or will it kill the branch or harm it in some way?
It's fab tree but just a tad too wide at the base.

yes i always do and it doesn't affect the tree one bit,just keep it nicely topped up with water

Perhaps trim the side closest to the wall (assuming it's not in middle of room) so that it looks fine from the viewing side still but you can push it back a bit.
