gifts for 8 year old boys?

Meeting friends for lunch on Sunday, and it has been decided that we're doing token presents for the children. What are your suggestions for 2 8-9 year old boys that I hardly know? They need to be inexepensive, easy to take on the train, and easy to get hold of as I'm at work!

My ds (9) suggests Nerf guns, action figures, stacking cups, football, watch, guiness book of records. He is a bit geeky so this is what he thinks his friends like - he would go for (books)kinex,(er, more books)electronic sets, audio cd's (books on tape, what a surprise, into artemis fowl and Dr Who), magic sets, depends what they are into, if not sure, maybe a book token would be safe (and easy to get!)

National Geographic electronic sets I picked up in Sainsbury today - £5 each and 3 for 2 - build your own alarm clock, or crocodile, or water pump etc.
