I have no clue what to get my ds he is 4, he has only just given up his Thomas obsession. He likes autos and more autos, craft things, Tom and Jerry, whatever I get him I will have to buy online, and I am short of time and energy at the moment as we are getting married on the 22, it is second ds's first birthday on the 24th, I think I should hide under my bed actually Blush .
I have got him so far stocking stuff and a crane with remote control, but want to get him a good present as he has been an angel all year and I was in hospital last xmas having ds2.
Any help welcome , I am desperate.GrinBlush

Craft stuff from here ?

What sort of budget? DD 3.8 and she is getting a Mobigo game thing plus books/stationery bits/playdough plus pyjamas etc

abgirl · 06/12/2010 11:27

Big variety box of lego - amazon do boxes which you can build about 20 different things from

Vtech kidizoon video camera - we've bought this for DS2 and it looks fab - again available on amazon

Keep going - it's all meant to be fun you knowXmas Wink

shinybaubles · 06/12/2010 11:33

festivefrieda craft stuff a good idea I was thinking of a storage box filled with craft stuff.....hmmm. Budget didn't have one less than £100 I think.
abgirl he's not that keen on lego , did think about that camera -do you think it's easy to use?
Fun - not sure right now I need a good dose of festive spirit I think.

Pintoy firengine and or station?

TeeBee · 06/12/2010 11:41

A garage and playmat for his cars?
At 4 we bought my DS a craft table, then a box of craft things
Mobilo?
Car transporter?

charlieincharge · 06/12/2010 11:42

Imaginext is very good. The space toy will be played until at least 6 as its not babyish. Think they all reach a spacey stage at some point and it doesn't break the bank. Comes in a good sie box too!

Its a hard age isn't it because they are so between the toddler stuff and the next group.

shinybaubles · 06/12/2010 11:44

TeeBee a garage is a good idea, he has a play mat, although he seems to like lining them up and making a traffic jam.
What is Mobilo

Omarama he has several fire engines and did ask for another...

Instruments?
From my experience, 4 year old boys like to make a LOT of noise!

Best of luck with the wedding btw! x

dinkystinky · 06/12/2010 11:46

Garage and set of cars would be perfect. Got that for DS1 last christmas when he was 3.5 and he (and his little brother, nearly 2 now) love playing with it everyday.

shinybaubles · 06/12/2010 11:51

Wow so many replies - thankyou so much a bit less panicked now.
Somy favourites are a garage and or a camera, and maybe some craft stuff.
Drama you are so right about the noise and thankyou.
charlie you're right I do find it a difficult age and he did ask for that space ship from Imaginext earlier in the year but my sis had a look and said it made a ridiculous amount of noise - is this the case?

Get the camera - my DS (now 4.5) got it for his 4th birthday and it has been fantastic.

Kiddiezoom one. Doesn't take great quality photos but has games on it and is great for videos. My DS plays with it all the time and takes videos all the time.

It has a cable and we watch them back on the tv.

What about starting a wooden train collection like brio. We started one when he was 3 and have picked up bits along the way. Tesco, etc all fit. We can make fab layouts on the floor as we have turntables etc now. Good, as it gives other people things to buy, remote control trains etc. It would be expensive to buy in one go but not when you get things from other people.

kitbit · 06/12/2010 11:59

Lego! Definitely. Lego city has a fire engine that might do the trick.

shinybaubles · 06/12/2010 12:03

scotgirl I think the camera will def go on the list - thanks for the review.
A good idea about the wooden train thing, I think it's just Thomas the character he has outgrown, he has an ikea wooden set he still plays with.

pongonperdy · 06/12/2010 12:08

Build it from early learning is great. Like giant mecchano for little ones. Can build cars etc.

cheeseytoastie · 06/12/2010 12:15

On my DS aged 4.8's list is:
Mack Monster Truck set from Disney store
Nanobugs set (check iwantoneofthose)
chuggington interactive set (got it for £40 from toysrus)
a turntable and connecting engine shed for his wooden Thomas
Toy Story 'stuff'
Postman Pat set (damn Milkshake adverts!)

Hope that gives you some ideas!

TheUnmentioned · 06/12/2010 12:21

ds is 4 at xmas. he is getting...

imaginext space shuttle
kidizoom camera
imaginext boat
toy story bit and pieces

(bbirthday and xmas)

he got the tower of doom from elc last year - its good.

livvylouis · 06/12/2010 12:23

My ds 3.5 years very much into Toy Story so Buzz lightyear in our house. How about some games such as hungry hippo's or wack a mole or pop up pirate both of my dc's love them all.

OhLoueyTownofBethlehem · 06/12/2010 12:25

My DTs are nearly 4. They are getting a garage, imaginext rocket and fire station, talking buzz lightyear and some more train stuff. (Not all from us I should add, some are coming from grandparents). I didn't think the rocket was particularly loud but then I have loud children.

Agree with scotgirl, wooden train sets are good, we add new things every birthday/christmas. Brio can be expensive but lots of places sell the wooden track for less - if you are shopping online, google bigjigs as they are quite cheap.

They are also just getting into games - we've already got pop-up-pirate but there are lots of others aimed at their age group.

Already thinking about their birthday and have some ideas for dressup stuff - policeman/fireman/dr etc.

JenaiMarrsTartanFoxCube · 06/12/2010 12:31

Ds (age 10) is an absolute petrolhead (to the extent that dp is beginning to worry Xmas Hmm ).

Things that he loves:

Playmobil. Ds started getting Playmobil at 5 and still plays with it five years later. It is fabulous stuff and the natural progression from Brio imo. Ds like Lego but is a player rather than a builder, iyswim.

Pretty much any book about cars is a winner.

Second the car transporter suggestion.

Absolutely get a garage. Really.

Does he have a road rug thingy? Like this . Ds has 3 (!) and has played with them for a good 7 years.

shinybaubles · 06/12/2010 12:31

Ohlouey I think ds is pretty loud too - lol.
Thanyou so much everyone for all the really great ideas, some will be kept for his birthday in March.
So I am thinking -
garage
rocket
camera
train bits
meccano - the easy one

not all from me btw...from all family.

he has a play mat, although he seems to like lining them up and making a traffic jam

Sorry, missed that. Yes, making the Worlds Largest Traffic Jam is a popular pastime Xmas Grin Ds will do this for hours .

shinybaubles · 06/12/2010 13:17

Yes Jenai the never ending traffic jam with every single auto of any size - hours of fun Grin.

Just wanted to say thanks so much to everyone for all the fab ideas, very helpfull. Feeling much calmer Smile
