If you are getting a turkey and ham, how much are they going to cost?

DP ordered them from the local butcher, we know him pretty well so I don't think he'd rip us off....but was told today it'd be E100 altogether. We are not flush with cash at the moment, I've been saving since August and can afford to pay E100, but think it is excessive...

Then again, it's the first time I've had Christmas at home, so not sure what to expect..

I have ordered all of my Christmas meat from a farm shop. The turkey was £9.75/kg and the ham was £10.99/kg.

Is it a huge turkey and a huge ham?

I would expect to pay around £40 - £50 for a free-range turkey and maybe £20? for a ham from our very popular butcher in south London.

I'm untreated to know about the ham as was going to order from the butcher this year because the one I got from tesco last year was disgusting.

I'll rethink if it's going to cost more than my house!

What is the exchange rate at the moment? I know that E100 is a little bit less than £100, but not sure how much.

Do you know how big the turkey and ham are? How many people are you feeding?

Paying up to £40 for a free range turkey from Waitrose to feed 4-7 people. It was the 2nd to cheapest free range one. That was about what I expected.

We're paying £30 for a 10lb turkey from the butchers and £12 for a ham. That's up North though.

I got a big frozen turkey from Tescos at 20 quid reduced from 40, also hams are half price in sainsburys at the mo so got a big one for a tenner. So yes a 100 quid sounds a lot to me.

Hmmm. E100 is 91 ounds. Think I'm stuck with them now as they are ordered but I'll be making a lot of freezer stuff! We'll be turkeyd and hammed out of it. Turkey is 14lb. Know it will be good though, because the butcher is very good, always has nice meat. It will probably be a nice ham so, won't it?

Feeding 6 adults, two children.

I've ordered my turkey - 11 lb for 5 adults and 4 children. It's a free range bronze and is working out at E3.98 per lb if thats any help to you. I think the general guideline is to allow 1lb of uncooked turkey per person so you should have loads ( and loads ). You can always freeze the cooked leftovers and have it later when you can face it again!

14lb is 6.4kg, so at the price mine were that would be £62.40 for the turkey. Do you know how big the ham is? At my prices the £29 would buy around a 2.75kg ham.

I think you will have a lot of leftovers though! We have 4 meat eating adults and 3 children and have ordered a 3kg turkey crown and a 1kg ham.

I love my butcher but his turkey is very expensive. In previous years, I have used him an the turkey ( about 12-14lb ) is £60!!

Supermarkets, hate to say it, are cheaper. Two years ago, Waitrose reduced theirs on Xmas Eve, even the Bronze free range ones. All half price.

So last year we ran the gauntlet - and they didn't reduce them, but DH picked up a very nice free range M and S one on his way back from work in London for under £40.

We are leaving it again this year.......

Also, I bought my ham at Sainsbury's yesterday, it is half price at the moment. Its perfectly good quality, and IME, with ham the end product is more about how you cook it than a turkey.

At the end of the day it depends what you want from your meat.

I would rather buy a locally produced, free range turkey which has been reared slowly and hung to develop flavour. As long as I can afford one this is what I will buy. It is the same with the ham/chipolatas/bacon/sausagemeat etc, the ones which I buy are from locally reared Saddleback pigs, which are reared slowly outside and the meat is hung properly.

I expect to pay a bit more for this than for meat from a supermarket.

We put in our order at the farm shop last week, they said to expect to pay around £90. That is for a small turkey (4kg ish), 2kg of unsmoked ham joint and 3 kg of best beef.
Not bad considering I am vegetarian!
dp and the children aren't though, so thast to feed 1 adult, 1 teenager and 4 children. I think we may be having curries and pies for weeks after christmas day.
