Well we seem to have filled up the last one so I started a new one. Hope that is ok with everyone!

Jacaqueen - I finally remembered to have a look at my Angel Chime. It is small - about 10 inches tall. Very light metal. Easy to put together. Looks ok. Word of warning - was searching for who it was who asked me and came across a post from someone whose parents had one and it burnt their table! So they get v. hot.

I love the idea of white cyclamens and mini fir trees, whoever that was. With white lights? Lovely.

Today I bought MORE lidl gingerbread and have already started eating it, like santas fat little elf.

I also got my cake boards & decs- I am going for winterwonderland cake theme with mini fir trees, and reindeer and santa in his sleigh.

I know I'll get flamed for this, but is anyone else considering room garlands? I love them- reminds me of my childhood... if I get some knowing ironic ones does that make it ok? Grin

I am making an advent calendar inspired by this but out of felt - I've been cutting out stars all night...

glitter, what is a room garland?

I too am taken with the idea of white cyclamen and fir - last year we planted cyclamen under the tree as it was a live one, and it looked gorgeous both then and all through spring.

glitter - I think to relive ones own childhood Christmases once an adult must be the absolute height of good taste. Surely thats one of the great pleasures of Christmas?

lordrowdy - I am very old. 43. Am I excused? Although, tbh, once you get to 43 you don't really give a stuff. One of the great pleasures of ageing.Grin

lordrowdy - the Sarah Raven book is excellent and extremely poncetastic. I have had it a few years and have made a lot of the recipes and pinched a few flower and bulb ideas from ti too.

Your daffs would do well in a pot, if you bring them in the warm they may flower as its sounds like they are ready. I have hyacinths at around the same stage, I am keeping them in a cold room atm but will bring them in in about a week so hopefully they will flower for my pre Christmas party.

Oh and I don't read Country Living. Contemporary here, I worship at the altar of Russell Pinch and Panik Design. Grin

Great, I have found it on amazon and will buy it now. Thanks for the tip about the daffs, too. I think they're only growing because the squirrels kept trying to dig them up, so they ended up with rather too light a layer of soil on top!

Btw, if I were reading contemporary design magazines, I suspect I'd be less shamed. Country Living is certainly aimed at a market older than the both of us. Grin

sybil......... oh sybil... why don't you post a photo of said bulbs....I for one have loads of extinct bulbs amongst my decs which are no longer any use to me.......maybe somewhere in deepest darkest..... for a start are they screw or push?

hobbitoes I may have to kiss you...

I will try to get a photo done after feeding the dc tea, but they are push-in, they are consumer lamp code G4, and they are 5v (0.7w) on a non fuse lamp, and 5v (o.6w) on a fuse lamp. They are the long thin coloured kind with a narrow base with two holes in it. Thank you very very much for offering to look. Grin

Room Garlands: Foil or paper cut out concertina kind of things which you stretch between opposing corners or from light to room corner- I love them DP hates them, you usually see them in pubs will try and link...

Ok I have uploaded a couple of photos of my bulbs to my profile, thanks again for Looking hobbittoes

glitterkitty I think a room can look really bare without something dangling from the ceiling. We tend to use paper chain from the elc (pre-licked thereby saving on precious saliva Wink) or you can buy crepe paper which we generally do in two contrasting colours, cut into thinnish strips and twist together. Garlands are very retro I think so they must be ok!

If you know someone selling Phoenix cards, their paper chains are very tasteful!

I have finally chosen my wrapping paper and omg it is so gorgeous.

It is pale blue (not quite Tiffany blue but hey) with black outlines of birds on it, from Waterstones (sadly, I can't find a pic to show you). I've got black ribbons to go with it and now just need something to attach in the centre - maybe vintage-style buttons?

Will do brown paper and red ribbons for the small children as the paper was too expensive to use for them as well!

I panicked over wrap in the end and bulk bought M and S slightly retro-ish Santas for the children's presents.

I mustn't buy any more for adults as now have a variety all variations on the Nordic reindeer motif.

Has anyone seen cut out snowflake braid ribbon? Nigella has it round her chutneys in her book. I've found it on ebay but t'is a bit pricey....

Sunshineonlee - the low voltage seems to be an issue. Most other lights are at least 6v, also the base is very narrow and this just doesn't seem standard any more.

Homebase don't have their bulbs on display here yet, I will make sure I get there as soon as they do though, thanks for the tip!

Belligerentghost I don't think you can go wrong with tiffany blue (ish) can you? Its a colour to quicken anyone's heart. Sounds lovely.

Hello. I've never posted on this thread before but I thought you were the right people to ask.

I have just finished making a home-made advent calander for DS and need some ideas for what to put in it.

I thought of making some mini ginger bread men but I'm not sure how long they will keep. I've also got some heart shaped chocolate moulds so I could put chocs in but do you have any ideas for cheap non foody things?

DS is 4.

Hello and welcome littlepurpleprincess. What a lucky DS you have. There have been a few threads on here the past few weeks with ideas of what to put in advent stockings/calendars, the list included from memory:

  • Pieces of paper with activity of the day eg making salt dough decorations, dressing the tree etc
  • Pieces of paper with promises on eg you can stay up late one night in the holidays etc
  • Lego pieces each day that make up to a whole toy
  • GoGos
  • Football cards
  • Gold/silver pens
  • Bouncy balls

If you do an advanced search inputting advent stocking fillers/ideas or similar I am sure you'll find some more.

Littlepurpleprincess I made mini gingerbread men recently and, stored in tupperware, they started to go a bit soft after around 2.5 weeks.
