Is Tinsel naff?

NoseyNooNoo · 02/11/2010 14:31

I wanted to buy some tinsel today. John Lewis have something called 'mini tinsel' online but it's out of stock. They had none instore either. I then noticed that none of their decorated trees had tinsel. I am being terribly naff wanting tinsel?

It might be a bit naff but I love it on my christmas tree!
It is not acceptable, however, to drape it over picture frames / round light fittings / at the foot of lamp bases etc as my mother had a tendancy to do in the 70's Wink

girlywhirly · 02/11/2010 15:48

Have whatever you like, Nosey. No such thing as naff, only personal preference when it comes to decs imo.

runmeragged · 02/11/2010 15:50

Tinsel is nice. Can get in garden centres usually.

CherryRocketMonster · 02/11/2010 15:50

i love tinsel, dont care if it is naff!

GrimmaTheNome · 02/11/2010 15:52

Of course its naff.

A proper xmas tree should be naff!

Lovely stuff. Grin

PennyDreadful · 02/11/2010 15:55

Can't bear tasteful Christmas decorations personally. Always slightly suspicious in houses that have three single (matching natch) baubles dangling from window frames and mantelpieces....

PennyDreadful · 02/11/2010 15:56

and i'm sure i'm not the only person to bury my head in the tinsel and take a good sniff to get all Christmassy Grin

GetOrfMoiLand · 02/11/2010 15:57

I don't like tinsel. My dd always clamours for it.

My gran draped the house in what seemed like 600 feet of the stuff, put me off.

I like to see the tree at christmas, so just have red and gold and blue baubles, and white fairy lights.

LynetteScavo · 02/11/2010 15:59

I love a bit of naffness at Christmas. I always buy the cheepest crackers becuase they are the ones we used to have when I was a child in the 70's.

I remember "posh" crackers becomeing fashionable in the '80's, and my parents had them for a few years, but I don't think you can beat a cheap cracker.

My mum always drapes a bit of tinsel over her pictures/mirrors. Don't go that far into naffness..keep the tinsel on the tree.

I bet the pound shop has loads.

I drape tinsel on the picture frames, and DD winds it round the bannisters. Looks lovely Grin We only do it in one room though.

GrimmaTheNome · 02/11/2010 16:29

Does anyone still do paper chains or crepe paper decorations?

BecauseImWorthIt · 02/11/2010 16:30

Yes it's naff.

But so are most Christmas decorations! If you like it, go for it.

I don't like it on my tree for some reason, but I have gold tinsel with little foil stars that hang off it which I wrap around the handrail of our bannisters.

nannynobnobs · 02/11/2010 16:32

I have tons of tinsel and when I have no room left on the tree I put it around the living room. I don't want tasteful, I have young children, i want it to look like a tribute to Liberace!
I too bury my head in it and have a big old sniff Penny :o New tinsel just doesn't smell the same though...

nannynobnobs · 02/11/2010 16:33

Grimma I have old paper decorations too, saved from my parents' clear out. I also picked up some fab German paper decs from a boot sale.
Just try and buy vintage paper garlands on Ebay; they go for silly money.

LoopyLoops · 02/11/2010 16:37

The only excusable use of tinsel is on children's shoes on the last day of term before Christmas.

I refer you to the festive bible.

bandgeek · 02/11/2010 16:39

Tinsel is the most annoying thing ever - you'll still be sweeping up shiny bits of foil come March Grin

TigerFeet · 02/11/2010 16:42

I stopped posting on the ponce thread when I realised how naff tinsel is percieved to be.

I love it. It's all sparkly and shiny [magpie]

I will festoon my house in it whether the ponces like it or not.

B&Q had lots of it all different colours.
Who cares if it's naff.

tulpe · 02/11/2010 18:14

I love the idea of tinsel but don't like it on my tree and not sure where else one would decorate with it (other than 70's style mirrors, pictures etc as already stated :) ).

So, if you don't use it on the tree.....where else can you (ahem) stick it? Wink

Grimma - I love a good crepe paper chain - the kind where you take two different coloured strips of paper and fold over and over again to kind of plait them. We always had those as kids and so do them every year for playroom and DCs bedrooms.

pointydog · 02/11/2010 18:17

No it's not naff. It's very purdy and twinkly.

I have tasteful golden tinsel of the muted gold variety that has little stars coming out of it that wobble a bit with the heat coming from the lights. I push it down in towards the trunk to give the tree some 'depth'. It is all extremely tasteful and lovely and plenty of folk say so.
