Hi All

When will everyone be doing their 'big' shop for christmas? I tried the home delivery last year and was rather disappointed as most things were substituted (sp?). I dont want to go on christmas eve so was thinking about going on the wednesday night as i think the thursday night will be too busy ( i work in the day).

I get up early on Christmas Eve and I am in ASDA for around 5.30 am. Place is pretty quiet. Booze is bought a good few weeks prior.

Once back from ASDA I shoot into M&S and get their first food ordering collection for the turkey etc.

Usually home, feet up and all done on Christmas Eve by around 10.30!

wfrances · 19/10/2010 08:37

chocs,sweets,biscuits,booze,pop,cake ,ect ive started now.
i place online order from tesco to arrive day b4 xmas eve, anything missing or forgotten i send oldest ds to town for(just down the hill)
youngest ds has his birthday christmas eve so no last minute shopping,my house is full of guests all day and night.
make sure you buy things like paxo, branston pickle{if you like that sort of thing early,as down here its stuff like that sell out quickly,

CherryMonstersUnderTheBed · 19/10/2010 09:04

i usually do mine a day or two before christmas. this year it will be the wed or thurs. probably will do it either early morning or late evening around 10pm.

girlywhirly · 19/10/2010 09:42

If you plan what meals you will be making, you can get non-perishable stuff well in advance. Also stock up on boring but essential things like
foil
loo rolls
kitchen rolls
cling film
bin bags
matches
batteries
tissues
pain-killers
indigestion medicine
carpet and upholstery cleaning stuff
washing up liquid
loo cleaner
pet food
There are lots of offers about for sweets and biscuits at the moment.

Im starting to get a few bits each week with my normal weekly shop now. Will do a biggish shop beginning of december for cupboard stuff and then will send DH out for the fresh stuff on 23rd Dec.

TeaOneSugar · 19/10/2010 16:58

Ocado will be delivering on Christmas Eve, I can't face supermarket shopping at the best of times, so I will be staying well clear.

Christmas day dinner will be at MILs, so I'll give her some money towards the food in early December.

TitsalinaBumPumpkin · 19/10/2010 17:00

We have a 24hr Tesco, after the palaver of last year i am considering going at 1am Christmas Eve....

I have seen some shockingly shamefull things in Tesco at Christmas.

TitsalinaBumPumpkin · 19/10/2010 17:01

Oh and i also buy disposable Turkey tray and giant Tinfoil well in advance.

TeaOneSugar · 19/10/2010 17:08

One of the things I hate about christmas supermarket shopping is the amount of food and drink people are shovelling into their trolleys, I've seen couples with a trolley each piled high, how can you need that much food and drink for a couple of days.

(and breath)

Not a fan of supermarkets me Grin

1234ThumbScrew · 19/10/2010 17:12

Teaonesugar - that could have been me the year I stupidly took DH with me. He's terrible in supermarkets, loves going, but doesn't very often so if he's let loose he'll buy loads. It was a very expensive shop Blush.

MuGGGhoulWump · 19/10/2010 17:13

Non fresh a couple of weeks before, fresh after work on the 23rd.
There's only two of us though.

TeaOneSugar · 19/10/2010 17:28

1234ThumbScrew Sounds like my DH, he's banned from supermarkets, he'll come back with loads of food but nothing you could put together to make a meal Smile.

1234ThumbScrew · 19/10/2010 18:33

Yep Teaonesugar and it'd never occur to him to buy anything like loo roll or washing powder.

neverenoughMEtime · 19/10/2010 19:21

My DH is terrible at the supermarket. He chucks in all sorts of rubbish, you coudn't make a meal out of any of it and one christmas he came with me and we ended up with 2 trolleys, i almost collapsed at the till Shock But i was still food shopping the week after because the stuff he put in was junk!!

DomesticGoddessInTraining · 19/10/2010 21:31

We have a delivery booked for 23rd Dec. Thankfully Unfortunately I'm working right up till Christmas Eve while DH is off, so I'll send him out to get anything that's missing from the order. Grin

tefal · 22/10/2010 15:06

How have you managed to get an order online alreayd Domestic? I tried last year at this time but got an e-mail in December saying it was cancelled.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 22/10/2010 16:00

We got a delivery last year for the 21st I think, possibly the 22nd. Anyway, everything came, all stayed fresh, no problems.

Plan to do similar this year.

I will be working christmas eve night and boxing day night and there will only be me, dh and the ds's so I am seriously considering not bothering with a big meal at all[hblush]

craftynclothy · 22/10/2010 16:08

Have an Ocado slot booked for the 23rd. Am hoping it goes to plan but suppose I can go fight the other shoppers with 2 kids in tow on Xmas eve if it all goes wrong HmmShockConfused

DomesticGoddessInTraining · 22/10/2010 21:50

Not sure how I found out that the Waitrose slots were open - maybe in an email from them? I just booked it like a normal shop - have just added enough items to take it over £50 and I'll amend it accordingly nearer the time.

MadameCastafiore · 22/10/2010 21:52

Ocado are visiting me on 23rd too - last year a feqw things were substituted so have left myself enough time to go to the shops if I really really need to.
