If Santa only brings the stocking, why write letters to Santa asking for 'big' presents?

DD will be just turned three this Christmas and will be just starting to understand Father Christmas, so I want to start with the traditions we will carry on till she stops believing.

So how do you explain asking for big presents if Santa only brings the stocking?

For us, Father Christmas brings a big present and the stocking presents.

TheFallenMadonna · 13/10/2010 20:55

Mine don't ask Father Christmas for anything big. They ask for something small that could go in a stocking. They know that we buy the big present. Last year DS asked for some lego figures and DD for a hello kitty toy.

mine write letter and ask for things santa could get in a small bag, he brings a stocking too for example last year on list was purple recorder, character blanket, gingerbread house to share and something else. we tell them that for santa to get all in his sleigh it has to be small, then main presents can come from us.

FC brings one big thing and fills stockings.

We buy big present and a few smaller ones.

PirateScaredyCat · 13/10/2010 21:06

she's at the age now where you can explain it however you like, set your own rules so to speak.

i realised i could make my own traditions, not neccesarily do what my parents did. I can't, i don't have the money they had lol.

BatBrainsPumpkinHead · 13/10/2010 21:09

we use the letter to figure out what dc wants. However the letter get sent to fc but copies go to various family members too. So dc writes the letter and then we take it to library/scan it and then dc sends letter. The grown ups talk amongst themselves about what so of stuff is on the list and the sort of things that interests/is suitable for dc.

Hmm stillnnot sure how to explain it when she's older if she asks.

In our house there would only be one main present and I think DD should know it come from us.

They only ask Santa for things that can fit in a stocking; poly pocket, hot wheels cars, etc They know the big present comes from us so they might write a christmas wishes list for me.

elphabadefiesgravity · 14/10/2010 20:26

For us Santa delivers everything and decides whether they have been good enough to have it but it is us that actually buys them and sends them to Santa for delivery
