London panto - for what ages?

I have never been to a panto (gasp! but I am not from this country) and was thinking of taking our family (2 children- 8 and 6) to one in London over the Christmas holidays. Are all pantos appropriate for children, or are some too adult? I'm not overprotective, it's OK if some of it goes over their heads, I'd just hate to drag the whole family to something, only to realise it was wildly inappropriate....

Was looking at Hackney Empire or Lyric Theatre.

Pantomimes will be suitable for ages 8 and 6. This is the one time in theatre when you are allowed to shout out loud! The humour tends to be a bit 'cheeky' (think enormous frilly knickers) rather than really rude. I would have thought it would be clearly advertised as an adult show if that's what it was.
