Taking a vote: Do kids really love new PJ's on Christmas Eve?

I am thinking of starting it with dd, who will be three at Christmas. It will be the first years she understands anything about Christmas so seems like a good time to start it.

I'm thinking of wrapping a present up with:

A new cup for her
A sachet of hot chocolate
Some edible glitter
A christmas Book (maybe a night before christmas)
New Pj's

Do your DC love it when you do it? Or does it just lost amongst everything else that happens at Christmas?
Did you grow up with it and do you have fond memories of it?

Ooooh - never heard of this but what a fab idea. Think i might start doing it for a treat for me too!!!!

thehat · 18/09/2010 21:46

The elves deliver new pjs on Christmas eve here too.

Lovely new pjs for the present opening photos on Christmas morning!

ravenAK · 18/09/2010 22:23

We do bytheMoonlight, but then put them away on Twelfth Night with the rest of the Xmas stuff.

It wasn't planned - I just bought ds some nice Xmassy PJs when he was a baby, & by the end of Xmas they were nearly outgrown anyway, so were packed away, & subsequently passed on to dd1 two Xmasses later.

It's since become a family tradition - on 1st December dd2 will be getting ds's Xmas pyjamas from '05 & '06 this year, plus dd1's from '07 &'08, & probably her own from '09...& then a new pair on Xmas Eve.

Once she's grown out of them we pass them on.

I know it's a bit daft, but I do like a nice pair of reindeer pyjamas!

BuckBuckMcFate · 18/09/2010 22:38

We do it too. When they are in the bath DP or I jingle reindeer bells and we all listen. Wrap up the DC and they run to their bedrooms where the elves have left presents on their pillows. And for me and DP too! Smile

I love this part of Christmas.

We all get new pj's and a mug. Then downstairs there is a present with hot chocolate, marshmallows and The Snowman DVD.

We all cwtch up and watch it before they go to be bed.

DS1 is nearly 14 and last year he was very disappointed to get ordinary pj's instead of christmas ones as I couldn't find them in his size - off to google now!

Exogenesis · 18/09/2010 22:48

DD (4) loves her christmas PJ's. They always arrive whilst we are at church along with stockings and the last christmas decorations (a family member or friend has a key and comes in and sets everything up for when we get back. Sweeties in dishes some christmas flowers , oh and a new christmas decoration on the tree.) her christmas Pj's will be on her bed. Last year was the first year I did the whole getting someone to come in as she was 3 and able to be excited but, new PJ's are all part of christmas. No one wants christmas morning pictures in tatty old nightclothes.

justwaitaminute · 18/09/2010 23:28

What a lovely idea, hadn't heard of this until now but will definately be doing this from now on.

LastOrdersAgain · 18/09/2010 23:33

My DS couldn't give a stuff.

And I just bought a nice pair in Lidls so he doesn't need any new ones.

However, I do always buy him a new decoration for the tree each year, so he looks forward to getting that. There is always a space left for the new decoration, which he puts on, and then I lift him to do the fairy and switch on the lights. Thats our tradition.

Librashavinganotherbiscuit · 19/09/2010 07:52

"We do new PJs, hot chocolate and chocolates , a Christmas film on DVD and a Christmas bedtime story."

This sounds fantastic, think going to adopt that one. Mainly because I like any excuse for hot chocolate and chocolates...

Christmas pjs are essential here. Usually Grandma takes care of this one, and in previous years they have come from The Disney Store (seriously cute pooh bear ones) or JL.

Our other tradition is to go out with the reindeer food here please look - we make a wish and scatter the food on the ground. Luckily reindeer food sparkles so it helps the big man to find us when he's flying over. To help a bit more we light a 'runway' of tea lights (we put them in foil cups) and then put out his mince pie, drink and some carrots for the reindeer.

Giving this a bump for the link in my last post.

I tried this one year, and my DC thought I had gone mad. Clearly I am not convincing enough with the tinkling bells and the fairy dust glitter. The DC just gave me a WTF? look.

We always read The Night Before Christmas though, and they love that.

i second 'thehat'

new pjs are more for all the xmas morning photos!

bytheMoonlight · 22/09/2010 09:12

I bought dd (will be 3) some PJ'S yesterday with a matching nightdress for her doll - she love it when opens it on xmas eve Smile

ja9 · 22/09/2010 12:11

bythemoonlight - i LOVE that idea - how cute!

MistsAndMellow · 22/09/2010 13:59

Yep, DD loves it when she goes into the bath and lo and behold the Christmas Elf rings the doorbell. She is 10 now Grin

I didn't realise that the purpose of new pjs was so that the DC look nice for photos in the morning. I just got into the habit after reading MN. Works a treat though! I might try to move my picture of DD onto this new name...

MistsAndMellow · 22/09/2010 14:09

Aha, the photo-moving has finally worked.

Observe new nightdress, "The Night Before Christmas" book and food for Santa and reindeer on shameful plastic plate what's not to like?

PlumBumMum · 22/09/2010 14:12

I always got new jammies on christmas eve, my mum still buys me mine and a packet of new pantsHmm

My dcs get their new jammies I always get them personalised jammies which seem to be more excitingHmm

I thought everyone got new jammies on christmas eve, no?

LadyCad · 23/09/2010 22:17

This whole Christmas pyjamas thing is utter nonsense.

Why do all these new-fangled traditions have to involve buying yet more stuff? Some of these lists are stark-raving bonkers.

I just might countenance it if I thought you'd all bought these pyjamas in the sales last January for practically no pounds, but you haven't, have you?

bytheMoonlight · 24/09/2010 11:42

No I got my dd's PJs from Vertabudet using a code which meant free delivery and £15 off a £20 order.

DC2 will have one of dd's old sleepsuits wrapped up, the baby will not know anything but dd might think it's strange if the baby doesn't receive anything!

In the OP I never asked if anyone resused old PJs or bought them in the sales/used discount codes but if I had I bet this thread would be full of people doing exactly that - look at Ravens posts for example.

Don't assume people are spending a lot of money on Christmas eve, I will buy the night before Xmas book and then, like other posters, bring it out every year.

If I couldn't have used a discount code then dd's pjs would have come from Primark like chippyminton suggests - love their fleecy pjs.

OP posts:
MistsAndMellow · 24/09/2010 13:41

I wheel that book out every year too. I buy fresh carrots though Wink

It isn't as if new Christmas pyjamas won't be worn again is it? Even if you don't get them in the sales (but don't spend the earth) they get used for the rest of the winter.

LadyCad · 24/09/2010 13:48

Oh all right then.

I might even do it myself.

But something will have to give. Grin

Ragwort · 24/09/2010 13:56

Never heard of it before - obviously haven't been reading the right threads in nearly 10 years of Mumsnet !

Won't bother to start it now (mean mum)!
