Praying but not working as usual

I am experiencing a very difficult and scary situation with highly unreasonable behaviour from some of the people involved. I am praying for peace, protection and calm in this situation but the situation is getting increasingly volatile and worse, or rather, the people involved are getting more and more extreme and aggressive. What am I doing wrong?

You are not doing anything wrong. God is with you in your situation.

However, God can't and wont step in and control people because we all have free choice. So if people are being unreasonable, God can give you peace about the situation, and can take all anxiety about it away from you, but he cant make the person be more reasonable or even nice to you.

Is there any way for you to completely step away from the situation?

Thank you for your kind and helpful post. I can't completely step away from the situation unfortunately. I feel bullied and harassed. I'm praying for calm and peace and not to act with heightened emotions (fear) myself. It's hard. Previously I have often found that prayers are so obviously 'heard' or received it's strange that this isn't the case atm, it's as if the person in question is getting more and more out of control.

I am praying now that God sends the holy spirit to fill you with his all consuming peace that you might find calm in the middle of this horrible situation.
