The Next Pope

Obviously it's far too soon for the conclave to begin, but is there any Cardinal that stands out to you that they might choose?

Who should I be looking into?

Interesting, I think Cardinal Tagle may be viewed as too young and they may vote for someone in their 70s.

It would be good to have a non European Pope though, someone from a country that is still more than traditionally Catholic.

I like Tagle. He was mentioned the last time round too as a papabile. But he was far too young. He has a facebook page which I started to follow and he makes good videos which I find moving and helpful.
I would love it if he became pope.

I watched a YouTube video last night saying that there's a chance an Eastern Catholic cardinal may become Pope. However there's not many eligible, so it's highly unlikely. Depending on what happens with this new one, it could well be an option next time though.

I’ve placed my first ever bet on Tagle. I heard him speak once and I really liked him. So praying for him. My friend is a good friend of Timothy Ratcliffe and thinks he might be. Good stop gap. As he knows the church well. And they know him. But he’s 80 in the summer so not likely.

It's been interesting to read the different media lists, the American media has put out a few lists that do favour American and Canadian cardinals. I've seen other lists that have Maltese and even Swedish cardinals in the running.

The 5 that seem to appear the most are Tagle, Erdu, Pizzaballa, Zuppi and Parolin.

Looks like a pope has been elected

Troubledwords · 08/05/2025 18:42

Well that was unexpected! An American with Peruvian citizenship elected as the new Pope.
Cardinal Robert Prevost, is Pope Leo XIV

Yes, totally blindsided me but what do I know!

Very disappointed it wasn’t Tagle. Everyone at my church was a bit ‘meh’ today. I feel very ambivalent about him. But time will tell. It’s always going to be difficult following on from someone who was charismatic and much loved.

I was also disappointed it wasn't Tagle but on the other hand I was relieved it wasn't some of the other possible papabili.
I also feel a bit ambivalent about him but it's because I know nothing about him. I've seen a couple of videos today of him in Peru working with poorer people and he does have a lovely way about him the way he approaches people (like Pope Francis).
Also some Peruvians from his diocese were raving about how wonderful he is.

I think he might be one who grows on me with time.

I liked how his speech began with peace be with you.

I am not a Catholic but watched with interest. I was moved by the new Pope Leo 14th's apparent suppressed emotion when he first faced his adoring crowd as it made me feel as if he was humbled by it all, and the significance of his role.

I felt like he was fighting back the tears a bit. He seemed overwhelmed.
You are a cardinal and you get elected and within an hour you're standing on the balcony with hordes of people screaming "Viva Il Papa" and then chanting your papal name.

Troubledwords · 09/05/2025 20:50

Tagle was too well known to have been chosen.

I'm warming up to him, yesterday's speech was a great start, and the bits I've read about him seem good to me. I think it's just as no one really thought about him as a contender.

I hope he encourages people that are lapsed or Christmas/Easter worshippers to return to the Church properly.

I’m really struggling to warm to Leo. Trying not to let the fact he’s American put me off. But it does grate a bit given the situation there. Which I know is stupid. But realised it’s mainly because it’s all happened so quickly. I loved Francis and he only died 3 weeks ago and all of a sudden someone else is in his place. Hopefully I’ll warm to him soon!

Toddlerteaplease · 11/05/2025 10:28

Plus I really wanted Tagle!

ChristmasStars · 11/05/2025 15:22

To be fair it was even quicker last time when Francis became pope. They can't leave too big a gap because everyone is just waiting for the new one.

Plus Leo isn't your average American.
