I find Professor RL Solberg’s in-depth teaching on this very contentious subject extremely helpful.

I'm a priest so my Sunday is a work day. I lead up to four services and preach every week. I work a six day week so I try and keep my day off as a day of restoration. That day moves around a bit as I need to be flexible about funerals but most weeks that will involve some rest, meeting with friends, gardening and creative stuff. I encourage my congregation to meet God and pray through art, music, silence, gardening, walking etc so that's what I do. There is no one else to do the housework so sometimes that happens but I try not to.

I love this response as it really resonates with me.
Jesus' new covenant is love.

Sunday isn’t the Sabbath of the God of Heaven, He blessed the 7th day and hallowed (set apart) it, for it is He who sanctifies us

I'm not quite sure what your point is here.

If you're saying that you can choose a day as your Sabbath, and it doesn't matter. I agree with you. I had a point where I had to work Sunday evenings and I chose to take Saturday instead.

If you're saying we should choose Saturday as the Sabbath, then I'd disagree. I think that God would see that choosing to make Sunday a day of rest, as the day Jesus rose again, was just as much honouring him.
It's the Biblical principal of having a special day for God every 7 days, in the same way the sabbatical year in the Bible is every 7 years.

It’s not I saying that the 7th day should be honoured, it’s God, it’s His law

I haven’t watched this yet, I’m out fellowshiping with a sister. Regardless of what this video does or doesn’t say, I’m believe the Word of God over man, every time

We are in agreement then, we both acknowledge scripture as our ultimate authority.

FuzzyPuffling · 25/01/2025 21:30

@PraiseHim may I ( respectfully) ask which branch of Christianity you are assiciated with?

This question visited me perfectly this evening. I had a poor sleep last night after an appointment at hospital yesterday. I woke didn't want to say to say myseLF. I couldn't do my housework and wanted to prepare for the Sabbath. I did my housework which is just a one bedroom and cooked some sauces etc. I then later tasted the sauces and didn't like them. Then I had a delivery from Sainsbury's and I saw some turkey slices I ordered by chance on offer. On everything I was seeing I said I just needed some salad for tomorrow and I would be good with the turkey slices for tomrrow with a salad. I didn't order any salad.

I went on deliveroo but was too tired to navigate the website but wanted salad. I stopped I was too tired. There is a shop 5 minutes from my church. that sell salad. If I ordered from Delivero what I would be eating inferior salad to me if I ordered as well. It was more expensive as well having already done my shopping. I have feeding eating issues which are chronic and have been hospitalised for them. God knows my needs with nutrition. I find this challenging though but this I tried my best and if I buy salad tomorrow just three items or so he knows I may rest more which I need with my conditions. I try to honour when my body speaks to me about food.

@PraiseHim God clearly loves scriptural people who abide by it. I think we all need to balance it with some spirit at times as well of course. I don't know the first thing about you, just that you are scriptural. You seem litreal to me and that can be a positive thing. I wish you well.

Justmerach · 25/01/2025 23:33

I don't mind this at all. This is an unlisted video of one year in hospital in 2016-2017 for feeding issues. I know my family will be thrilled if I bought some salad tomorrow. I am not medically a normal BMI. There are vulnerable groups and I do try and follow. I think my family may have questions about how I was it was.niot able to. I tried my best.

Why do you ask?

It's an interesting question because church is a biblical institution and we are supposed to be in a community of believers. I'm guessing since you are standing on scripture you must be a serving part of a Christian fellowship.

Justmerach · 26/01/2025 05:57

Here we go, done my housework but for my needs I have a diagnosed allergy to dust mites I still need to shake my bed everyday for my health so doing chores. I have a phobia to dust as well, but try and not sweep and may use a tissue if it is too much to suppress it to collect the dust, it is bad for my health as well the dust.
Ok in the end I got creative and shook my bedding outside to try and prevent sweeping and it has, but I had to do the chore.

Now today I am looking forward to some rest which ever way I can get it.

Why do you ask?

Because I'm interested!

I think that trying to sustain a Christian faith ( or probably any faith) is impossibly difficult without the support, discussion, challenge and learning we get from a community of similar people.

It's a bit like doing a degree without ever attending university- you can read the books and write thecesssys, but real growth and deeper understanding comes from the lectures, the seminars and from talking through things with fellow students and lecturers.

I like to think our faith is a fluid thing in terms of learning, progression and depth, as well as community and support.

The Sabbath command isn’t burdensome, we don’t have the to keep all the restrictions which were added by man. The Sabbath is to be centred around our creator, if you have to shake your bed, so be it, if you have a sick relative, take care of them etc

The bible says we are to fellowship and that the Holy Spirit will lead us into all Truth and teach us all things, so yes, both are required. Church is an assembly of believers

I am thinking alone these lines. Judaic modern laws now must have some exceptions for people on the Sabbath., We must explore these. There are so many changes to society and conditions that might cause a person leading them to have exception. Like my allergy I need to clean my bed everyday.. This allergy came later with modernity probbably and didn't exist in Biblical times.

You're not actually telling me what you do. Which is fine if you don't want to talk personally but it's hard for me to enter into a meaningful discussion, so I'll leave it there.
God bless you.

Definitely not for me then.

Sunday, not Saturday is my Sabbath and gardening is no chore for me, but a joy and a delight, and tending God's creation.

God is gracious and gives all free will. I don’t think anyone was saying that gardening is a chore, if I liked gardening I’m sure I would spend a large chuck of Sabbath in it contemplating creation and His awesomeness

When I refer to Christian Sabbath Keepers I am talking of those that honour the 4th commandment of 7th day worship, so Saturday

There may be some people who cannot physically or mental reasons get to church. They might think that their effort is not good enough. It is not like that illness and things can happen as well and God;s know your situation.. It doesn't make someone better in those grounds. With time there can be change as well.

It is something that I do like to do.

In a post I posted about timelines I linked to on another board I created one of the members posted about some Jewish families the cooker being set to turn of on the day of rest.

It made me think about the reponse about gardening. To me it is an effort and chore like, but someone else it could be an interest a surival mechamism for them. You have to be guided a bit by yourself.

Edited

The commandment doesn’t specify going to a physical place of worship though. Church is an assembly of saints, that could be one other believer, and it could be done at home. Sabbath is about recognising God as your creator and redeemer and honouring Him in Love, the first and greatest commandment

But their house has been left to them desolate, they didn’t follow Jesus, their man made laws were nailed to the cross and the light of Sabbath was again made prominent. Serving God is simple, His yoke is not burdensome
