Please do say hello πŸ™πŸΌπŸ€

Please can you elaborate a bit? I'm interested.

I guess you mean those that keep the Sabbath very traditionally- no shopping, work etc, but what does this look like in practice?

ChristmasStars · 25/01/2025 13:39

Do you mean observing the Saturday as a day of rest?

PraiseHim · 25/01/2025 14:46

@FuzzyPuffling I keep the Sabbath (7th day) as it is the 4th commandment, and to acknowledge the God of Heaven as my Creator and Redeemer. On the Sabbath, we are not to work, we are to fellowship, we cannot do our own pleasure and Sabbath is to be a delight. On Sabbath I rest in the completed works of Christ

I do try my best. Jesus was also at times not following oral law but the spirit of the law.
I do usually my housework on a Saturday and have the day off really on a Sunday. I am not the best cook but try to avoid using the pot to cook like sauces and try and do them the day before if I am going to, My self I wash on the Sabbath and make sure to do hands and feet in keeping with tradition.
I try and not go to shops but have at times on exceptions t I couldn't get on any other day that would be good for me. I have used these places so for my health. I try and avoid i. I have been encouraged by some NHS staff to go buffets Indian on a Sunday. What am I saying to owners who are really lovely that don't go to church and even like work in Tesco. I would not try and tell them what to do, but me using the service can leave one to question. I didn't grow up with shops opening on a Sunday.

I do go to church on the Sabbath.

I was saying to myself what I cannot do today with housework there is Monday as well etc.

Justmerach · 25/01/2025 15:56

Some church's will get together in a resturant after church to eat. They can also eat together at church. I think is fine. I mentioned in my post I thought what I am telling them if I was to use their serviices when not in emergency. It can be tricky to navigate.

As I understand it Christian Sabbath keepers are believers who observe the Sabbath as a day of rest and worship, often aligning their practices with the biblical commandment to keep the seventh day holy (Exodus 20:8-11). For many, this means setting aside Saturday as a day dedicated to rest, prayer, and fellowship with God, reflecting on His creation and provision.

Hmmm...this sounds as though it could be open to interpretation. I'm trying to understand, being ordinary C of E.

I don't work on Sunday, I go to church, I delight in God's creation...but I might do that by doing some gardening, or listening to music or by visiting family. How much of that would be considered ok?

PraiseHim · 25/01/2025 17:01

@Justmerach Jesus always kept the 7th day Sabbath

Correct, the whole day is dedicated to God

God is very specific about the day (Saturday, the 7th day)

I don’t have a denomination either. I read the bible and believe every word written in it and Stand on those Truths (doctrine)

You do know that to do miracles and healing on the Sabbath that come with charges in Biblical times which of course was not sound. Jesus was working to the spirit of the law. I thought this was well understood. I know that Jesus always worshipped his Father on the Sabbath as well.

I think gardening as was mentioned is a house chore. I would say though to listen music was fine.

Justmerach · 25/01/2025 18:11

I wrote this the below.

Healing was performed on the Sabbath in the synagogue by Jesus. This brought Jesus to the attention of Jewish religious leaders ( Luke 13: 14-17) for not upholding the commandment of rest. Jesus was not a law breaker in not upholding the rule of rest, but he brought forward a new logical conclusion.

PraiseHim · 25/01/2025 18:14

@Justmerach yes, the Pharasies found issue with Jesus performing miracles on Sabbath, and He rebuked them by saying He was Lord of the Sabbath (therefore knows it’s requirement as He created it for man). Ancient Israel had added doctrines of men to the Sabbath making it a chore and not a delight and reminder of who their creator (and redeemer) was (is).

Sabbath requires that we do not our own pleasure on the 7th day.

I went for a walk today to spend time in nature with God, it was lovely

Wouldn't it be lovely to chat about things we all share as common ground as believers, rather than trying to find things that divide us?

Some (most) biblical doctrine is a matter of Salvation. I think it’s crucial to have these conversations, even if they are uncomfortable for some

Thank you. That clearly clarifies that it is indeed well understood. People can listen to worship music on a Sunday. Just remember as well to try and honour the day as Holy as a guide for everyone who follows it.

FuzzyPuffling · 25/01/2025 18:28

Definitely not for me then.

Sunday, not Saturday is my Sabbath and gardening is no chore for me, but a joy and a delight, and tending God's creation.

MargaretThursday · 25/01/2025 18:38

We've always encouraged the children not to do school work and things like that on Sundays.
If they've suddenly remembered something due in on Monday morning, that's an exception, but it's very rare.

Yes, holy means set apart (in Hebrew), the 7th day

Sunday isn’t the Sabbath of the God of Heaven, He blessed the 7th day and hallowed (set apart) it, for it is He who sanctifies us

I'm a priest so my Sunday is a work day. I lead up to four services and preach every week. I work a six day week so I try and keep my day off as a day of restoration. That day moves around a bit as I need to be flexible about funerals but most weeks that will involve some rest, meeting with friends, gardening and creative stuff. I encourage my congregation to meet God and pray through art, music, silence, gardening, walking etc so that's what I do. There is no one else to do the housework so sometimes that happens but I try not to.

Justmerach · 25/01/2025 19:19

There may be some people who cannot physically or mental reasons get to church. They might think that their effort is not good enough. It is not like that illness and things can happen as well and God;s know your situation.. It doesn't make someone better in those grounds. With time there can be change as well.

It is something that I do like to do.

In a post I posted about timelines I linked to on another board I created one of the members posted about some Jewish families the cooker being set to turn of on the day of rest.

It made me think about the reponse about gardening. To me it is an effort and chore like, but someone else it could be an interest a surival mechamism for them. You have to be guided a bit by yourself.
