Help! Is this a nit (pic)

There has been a headlice outbreak in my daughters class before Easter…she didn’t catch them and I have been combing her hair through with a nitty gritty everyday throughout the holidays (nothing)…then, one day back to school and I combed out three of these…no lice, nothing else. I have even looked through with a magnifying glass she has a short bob and blonde hair so surely anything would show up? This was tiny, light brown and has been blown up using the magnifier app on my phone. I know it looks like an egg but it was flat, didn’t pop when pressed with my nail and didn’t feel gritty/sandy, just was totally flat. Any ideas. I have a serious phobia of headlice and luckily haven’t had to deal with them before. Daughters are 5 and 7 - I always wash their hair with the vosene shampoo and use the Hedrin protect spray religiously! Thank you.

Looks like a porridge oat to me!

Headline have a long abdomen and a small thorax. The legs are small but visible on the thorax. The colour ranges from transparent to dark brown.

Was it attached to the hair shaft? Hard to tell from the picture but could be an egg. If she is itchy (aren’t we all now reading this) or you find anything else weird I’d personally treat with Hedrin Once to be on the safe side.

Mumsnut · 26/04/2022 15:13

Empty egg? How big was it actually?

RebeccaCloud9 · 26/04/2022 15:17

Looks like barley/wheat rather than nits!

ImTheFuckOffCar · 26/04/2022 15:19

Lice are black?

SilentBob · 26/04/2022 16:32

No, that's a sugar puff

Not itchy and combed through again tonight and nothing similar just one tiny tiny flake of some debris prob picked up whilst playing outside…the barley looking thing was also minuscule! It also looks very similar to pussy willow pollen so could be that? She’s blonde and I have spent 30mins combing and looking then blow drying and it seems to be very clean certainly no signs of any! Fingers crossed. Although I’m sure some parents aren’t checking their kids heads in her class!

Tiny…like a speck of dust/grain of fine sand

Looks like her breakfast 🤣

Thighdentitycrisis · 26/04/2022 19:26

Don’t think so, nits I’ve seen dont have that different colour part, they are uniform and stuck to hair like glue. Check behind her ears and round the back hairline

IME

nit = the egg, are often similar to hair colour
lice = the adult creepy crawly, pake and with a dark middle that is the blood

Cravingsweets · 26/04/2022 21:09

The eggs are very glued into the hair. You really have to work your fingers on them to get them out. At least the active eggs are. I don't know what your picture is of, though, sorry!

Haveatakeaway · 27/04/2022 08:27

I'm itching now 😁
I think eggs are more like sesame seeds size or a bit smaller, not like a grain of sand.
one friends kids continuously have nits, I hate it when dh takes them to their house. They always insist they've treated the kids but don't get the point that if they won't treat themselves or their 16 year old daughter they will keep coming back! One of my sons has autism aswell and cannot bare people touching their heads so he's shaved his. Another son had lovely long curly hair but I had to cut it and the curls never came back. They now wear hats if visiting and are liberally doused in tea tree spray
