7-month old with diarrhea

My 7-month-old daughter has had terrible diarrhea for the past 10 days. Her stools (about 9 per day) are watery and green. For the first couple of days she wouldn't eat any solid food at all. On subsequent days, I just gave her baby rice made with formula and, when this didn't make any difference, I gave her fruit and vegetable purees again. I'm still breastfeeding and have been giving her a drop of water between feeds. However, she's started becoming tired and lethargic and I'm really worried. She doesn't have a temperature and doesn't seem to be teething. The doctor just says to "ride it out". I'd be really grateful for any advice on what I could do to help her and what solids I should be giving...

P.S. She absolutely refuses dioralyte.

I think you should go back to gp. Is she dehydrated?

Apo1 · 09/07/2010 19:55

I was thinking I'd go back to the GP on Monday, but that's 2 days away. Her skin seems to be OK and her fontanelle isn't sunken. Other than that, I don't know how to tell.

if you think your baby has these symptoms you should phone the out of hours team, or nhs direct.

Thanks ... do you have any advice on what solids I should be giving?

No, sorry. I wouldn't like to give you advice about your baby with these symptoms. I am not a medical professional and I would not like to think that I had given advice that might make you delay seeking professional advice.

I hope that doesn't sound uncaring or unsupportive. It is not meant to. There are many topics on which I will advise long and loud but I think the only advice you should seek is from a doctor.

Your baby is no doubt totally fine, but it's one of those things that you must check out.

Let me know how it goes. xx

Fewer wet nappies than usual (going 6-8 hours dry) and unusually lethargic and not responding in a normal way (staring into space, not looking at you when you say her name). These are the earliest and easiest signs of dehydration.
Go for foods with rice, pasta, carbs. avoid fruit/vedge purees and just plain water. All the green poo means is she is having rapid transit of poo. Sounds like tummy bug to me. 10 days is unusually long 5-7 is normal. I would be tempted to phone the OOH over the weekend if it persists. Certainly if signs of dehydration appear. Could be food intolerance but unusual to start out of the blue.

Many thanks for the advice. Only 4 "movements" so far today, although they were fairly large and watery. Hopefully it's a sign that things are slowly improving. Fingers crossed!
