Recurrent ear infection - DD on third course of ABs

DD2 (14 months) has had an ear infection for about 3 weeks now, the full works, with burst eardrums and snot coming out of both ears. She's had two courses of ABs and they cleared it up, but as soon as she stops taking the ABs the infection comes right back. We've just been to A&E for the umpteenth time and she's now got to take Amoxicillin for 2 whole weeks (on top of the 2 weeks she's already had) and we need to get a referral to an ENT and there's talk of grommets.

Can anyone come and hold my hand and tell me it's all going to be fine please?

It will be fine.

The ENT guys are magic and see this all the time.

Personally I had grommits as a kid and they apparently did me the world of good.

hiya, we're 3 weeks into a 2 month run of low-dose AB (azithromycin)... so far, so good, she seems happy taking them and have not noted any side effects. We won't know if it's worked until she comes off them - but for now it is actually enjoyable not to have a massive ear infection every 3 weeks or so..

FWIW - we found that DD was actually much better when her eardrums were burst, as it took the pressure off. You learn to live with the stream of gunk... The worst ones were when the drums didn't burst and meant her being in pain a lot.

Do ask ENT about the AB option - the first consultant we saw didn't raise it at all, whilst second was very pro... Hope your DD will be OK soon
