Advice about a nail that ripped off!

My 5 year old DD managed to bash her little finger between two hand weights and the nail was totally ripped off

I rinsed it under the tap and put a plaster on and held it above her head til the bleeding stopped.

She has gone to bed with two plasters on and a bit of kitchen roll taped gently over the whole lot to try and protect it.

She has had calpol and nurofen.

I was going to go to the chemist tomorrow and get some advice but does anyone have any advice/experience of this? I feel so sorry for her and wish i could fix it Will it hurt more tomorrow or less? I'm going to have to redress it aren't I? She's going to hate me even touching it but hopefully the plasters won't be stuck on as it bled so much inside them...

I think you need to go to a minor injuries unit as any weight heavy enough to rip the nail off could also cause a fracture of the bone. and any fracture under a wound which is left has a big potential to get infected from the open wound (its classed as an open fracture) is potentially serious as any infection into bone can set off osteomylitis, which is serious and difficult to treat. She can go tomorrow but make sure they have xray facility. I used to work in A&E
