DS age 9 has been swinging on new wooden monkey bars which are obviously too rough for kids hands. He said my hands hurt and he has about 6 small blisters on each palm some have burst. when we came home he washed his hands and screamed in pain, I ran to the bathroom and he was white as a sheet and wobbling I caught him just as he fainted and before he could hit the tiled bathroom floor!
he is fine now but should I cover the blisters for school tomorrow annd what do I do plasters, bandage, antiseptic cream?
I usually leave blisters to heal in the air but if the pain causes him to faint at school..............
sorry a bit of a daft question but I am no nurse

no, i would leave them

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/06/2010 21:50

poor lad. I'd leave them for over night but cover them in the morning as they've burst so he doesnt get dirt in them.

grapeandlemon · 28/06/2010 21:55

I would say they need to be dressed - burst blisters can get infected and are very very painful. If your GP surgery has a nurse they could dress them for you early tomorrow morning.

scurryfunge · 28/06/2010 21:59

Buy some blister plasters or some blister spray...it'll be sore, bless him but it doesn't generally require a visit to the nurse...you can bathe them yourself to keep them clean.

My eczema sometimes causes chunks of skin to fall off and leave raw patches, a bit like burst blisters.

I cover them with, uh, don't know what it's called. You get it from the chemist, it's like a thin pad that's shiny on one surface and cotton-wool-y on the other. I get the ~2 inch by 2 inch size, and stick it down with macropore tape.

You'd need to send the macropore tape in with DS as it will gradually peel off during the day...

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/06/2010 22:04

melonin Heathen?

TheHeathenOfSuburbia · 28/06/2010 22:08

That's the badger!

atah · 28/06/2010 22:11

I haven't put anything on them while he sleeps and was only thinking of covering them to cushion them from the pain but you are right badkitten they need to be covered to keep the dirt out too. I will see what i have in my meagre first aid kit as we will be on our way to school before the GP opens. This is much better than NHS Direct!

might even be melolin

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/06/2010 22:24

thats great atah. leave it on as long as you can as although it is non stick - its not totally non-stick. To remove it if its a bit stuck then soak his hands in warmish water.

atah · 28/06/2010 22:32

another daft question - its shiny side to the skin isn't it?

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/06/2010 22:35

it is

SagacityNell · 28/06/2010 22:37

yes otherwise he will scream with pain when you take it iff and its stuck

not that i have learned the hard way. oh noooo.

atah · 28/06/2010 22:41

thanks all, I bet you are glad you don't have me as a mother

Compeed blister plasers are brilliant. I used an old screwdriver and had a horrible torn blister on my palm . I got the toe plasters and it healed beautifully and they took the pain away. They stay on for days as well and dont get too grubby.

trumpton · 28/06/2010 22:45

NO NOT PLASERS obviously I meant plasters

NickOfTime · 28/06/2010 22:47

monkey bar blisters do usually heal really quickly if you leave them... ds1 proudly sports about 11 patches of hardened skin on his palms and even when they burst, he just gets back on the bars the next day. it is revolting, dirt everywhere, but so far no infections. monkey bars are like crack for small boys.

when they break their arms falling off, i do take medical action lol, honest...
