Hopefully by now it's stopped, but I would probably have called NHS Direct and seen what they said.

I would take him to A&E just to be sure

Thanks for your replies, at last it seems to have stopped and he ate his supper without any complaints, I did call NHS direct and was told to pinch the tip of his tongue for 10 minutes to stop the bleeding - not easy on a hot, tired 4 yr old but it seems to have done the trick if it bleeds again tomorrow A & E here we come!

tongues always bleed like mad but heal really quickly.

My brother bit right through and I mean RIGHT THROUGH his twice as a kid. it was like the texas chainsaw massacre

I know I could not believe how much blood there was! I was more worried about him digesting the blood - he seemed totally unbothered about it at the time and after 5 minutes of rinsing him mouth out he was off back on the climbing frame blood and all!

My 4 month old DD has bit her tongue today (we think), it's all red and scabby and bled for a while this morning which gave us a bit of a shock.
I'm hoping it will have healed by the weekend, as she's finding it a bit uncomfortable, poor thing.

Glad your son is ok now, OP.
